Computing Portfolio

At St Helen's, our computing curriculum is designed to equip every pupil with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Through the progressive iCompute curriculum, pupils develop computational thinking, digital literacy and computer science skills that prepare them for future learning, employment and responsible participation in society.

The iCompute programme provides a carefully sequenced curriculum that enables children to build knowledge and skills year on year. Pupils are given opportunities to think creatively, solve problems, develop algorithms, write and debug programs, analyse data and create digital content using a range of innovative technologies. Learning is purposeful, engaging and relevant, allowing children to apply their computing skills both within the classroom and in real-life contexts.

Computing is taught through practical, collaborative and enquiry-based experiences that encourage resilience, independence and critical thinking. Children are supported to develop executive functioning skills by planning, organising, testing and evaluating their work, while becoming reflective learners who understand that mistakes are an important part of the learning process.

Beyond the classroom, pupils are encouraged to extend their understanding through extracurricular opportunities, including coding clubs, STEM activities and engagement with external organisations and industry experts. These experiences broaden children's aspirations, introduce them to future careers within technology and cyber security, and demonstrate the diverse opportunities available in the digital sector.

In keeping with our Catholic ethos, Gospel Values underpin all aspects of the computing curriculum. Digital citizenship, online safety and respectful communication are embedded throughout learning, enabling pupils to use technology responsibly, ethically and compassionately. We work in partnership with parents and carers to promote safe online behaviours and foster positive relationships, ensuring every child feels valued, supported and welcomed as part of the St Helen's family.

Our aim is for every child to leave St Helen's as a confident, responsible and creative user of technology, equipped with the digital skills, resilience and moral understanding needed to flourish in an ever-evolving technological world.
