INSTRUMENT HIRE Program

Hiring an Instrument

School instruments (when available) are loaned out to students for a small rental fee of $40 per term. The process for this is outlined below under the heading 'Applying to Hire an Instrument'.

It is not the school’s intention to provide instruments for a student’s entire school life (except for larger instruments). Therefore, instruments are rented for limited times as set out below:

1. Least expensive instruments (e.g. flute, clarinet, trumpet): two years. This can be longer if the instrument is not needed by new students.

2. Medium cost instruments (e.g. tenor, trombone and alto saxophone): five years.

Rental terms may be extended at the discretion of the Head of Music.

Please be advised: We do not hire guitars, basses, keyboards or drums to students as these instruments are more readily available and tend to be relatively cheaper to purchase due to their popularity and ability to be mass-produced in a factory.

Expectations

Our intention of hiring these instruments out at a fraction of the market value is to remove barriers for students participating in ensembles and receiving tuition. We, therefore, ask that students:

• Are active members of either Training Band, Junior or Senior Concert Band, and/or Junior or Senior String Ensemble.

• Receive tuition on the instrument (this could be as part of our Music Tuition Program, or external lessons). This ensures proper care and use of the instrument, as well as proper training in technique and playing.

• Instruments are covered by school insurance at school and in transit. All damage, faults and thefts are to be reported immediately to the Head of Music.

• Parents should encourage students to view having the use of an instrument as a privilege and to look after the instrument as if it were their own. Instruments may be withdrawn from students if they are not treated with proper care.

• The school will periodically service the instruments; however, parents may be liable for any additional repairs that need to be carried out while the instrument is in their child’s care.
