HOME LEARNING

READING - Starts Week 4

The students will bring home a book in their Blue Take Home Folder. Some books will be an early alphabet book to encourage the students to look at initial letters. Some students are on higher levels depending on their reading ability. Remember each child is different and learns at their own pace.

  1. Orientate the book - read the title, look at the pictures. Ask the question - What do you think this story might be about?

  2. Reading will probably take about 5 - 10 minutes each night - Monday - Friday. This time will increase as the texts become more difficult.

  3. Sign the diary - this just helps us know that the book has been read and needs to be changed.

  4. If you would like your child to keep the same book for an extra night - please write KEEP in their diary.

  5. Place the diary and book in their Blue Take Home Folder to return to school the next day.

HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS

Please practise reading the high frequency words sent home and even try playing some games with them - like tic-tac-toe, making flashcards. These are the words that the students will need to recognise in order to start reading text on Levels 1, 2 and 3. When a level is mastered the student will receive the next level.

  1. Red Level Words - I, too, come, here, at, am, look, the, see.

  2. Orange Level Words - up, comes, mum, a, on, little, hungry, big, no, to, said, in.
