The UC application period is open! Seniors must submit their application between October 1- December 2, 2024.
Where and how do I apply?
The UC's share ONE application- how great is that? You simply check a box next to each campus you are interested in sending your application to.
You can find the application here.
Need help on HOW to do the application? Check out tips here and video tutorials here.
There are nine UC schools and you can choose to apply to as many as you want, including all nine. Be aware though that each UC school you apply to requires its own $80 application fee. If you have a fee waiver, you can apply to up to four UC schools for free.
What are the requirements to apply?
These guidelines will help you satisfy your admission requirements. Find them here.
What is going on with SAT and ACT testing for admission?
UC will not consider SAT or ACT test scores when making admissions decisions or awarding scholarships. If you choose to submit test scores as part of your application, they may be used as an alternative method of fulfilling minimum requirements for eligibility or for course placement after you enroll and that's it!
Find their statement about it here.
How is my application reviewed? What are they looking for?
The UC's take a holistic approach to their application review. This means that they look at you as a whole person, not just your GPA. UC admissions officers are looking at 13 things on your application. Check out what they are here.
What do I put on my activities list?
This is a way for the UC's to get to know you outside of the classroom and don't get discouraged if you don't feel like you have a lot to put on there. How do you spend your time? Maybe you babysit your younger siblings everyday. I would say that that puts you in a leadership position within your family aka definitely put it on the activities list.

Do I have to write an essay? What about a letter of recommendation?
The UC's require that you answer 4 short essays called PIQs (Personal Insight Questions). While there are 8 questions, you get to choose 4 that speak to you the most. See the question below for tips and tricks as to how to approach these essays.
Good news, you usually do NOT need a letter of recommendation for the UC's! However, certain majors or programs may require such. Be sure to check with your chosen major's department to see if there are supplemental application items.
How do I approach the essays? Where do I even start?
Think of these essays like a written interview, not a school essay. You are trying to show who you are as a person so try not to waste precious words repeating what you may have already listed in other parts of your application. Focus on what you value about yourself. After reading your essay, what values do you want someone to walk away knowing about you? Can you remember a story/time in your life when you displayed those values? Write about it.
Find the actual list of PIQ prompts here.
Listed below are my go-to resources when working with students on their PIQs.
