Introduction to Mass Communications is a course dedicated to studying the content and impact of media in the world- as an individual as well as a member of greater communities. We'll be watching media, discussing, thinking about bias, reflecting on logical fallacies, and thinking. So much thinking! All while watching movies, video clips, and television shows.
I will have an in class schedule with daily schedules posted.
I will take a photo of this schedule and post it to Google Classroom for those who miss class/need to know what was done.
I expect all students to be in my Google Classroom: when I am absent from class, I will use that platform to communicate plans.
Most, if not all class work, will be completed in class. I do not usually assign homework aside from permission slip style assignments.
I hope to foster a relationship and understanding with all students so that if a student needs additional support they feel comfortable coming to me for requests and suggestions of aid.
Unit 1: Introduction- What tools will we be using in the course? How are they used? Who is in our class and what is everyone like? Is everyone in the Google Classroom? Let's get started by making sure we're all on the same page!
Unit 2: Reality TV & Media Analysis- Let's flex those analytical minds by looking at "reality tv" (including youtu, be vlogs) and analayzing the content and the impact it has on us as well as the communities around us.
SIDE UNIT: AI & Deepfakes! What now? How do we tell?
Unit 3: Comedy & The Line- Using comedy as the source, let's investigate what, where, and how "the line" is drawn. Historically- does it shift? Why?
SIDE UNIT: Podcasts! What are we listening to? What ARE they?
Unit 4: Substance Use/Abuse & Learning- Let's investigate what the media says about substance use/abuse. What impacts does that have on overall knowledge and learning when it comes to this specific topic? What is the importance of representation?
Unit 5: Race & Bias- Let's talk about race through the lens of the media. We'll focus on common intellectual biases, how media impacts and interacts with them, and what that means for various races in the United States. How are our biases shaped by the narratives we experience through media? What is the importance of representation?
Unit 6: Gender & Norms- Viewing movies, television shows, and various clips- what norms are set through media? How does it differ based on factors like location or time? What is the importance of representation?
Unit 7: Logical Fallacies- When discussing past and current samples we will also connect to logical fallacies and how media either feeds or starves them. What is a logical fallacy? Can we catch them?
