Apple Classroom FAQs - For Teachers
Is the Apple Classroom app on my iPad?
It is a free app you will need to download from the app store using your Apple ID.
Can I use Apple Classroom on my laptop?
Yes, but you will need to get your laptop wiped and set up properly to be able to use it. If you would like to go through with that process, contact Tim Flanders at flandeti@spsdme.org. The process takes about 30 minutes.
Can I see all SPHS students or just my classes?
You can see only students rostered to you and they must be in your classroom for you to interact with and monitor their screens. The connection is bluetooth so it has a small range.
Will I need to create my classes or are they already rostered?
Your classes are already rostered and sync with Infinite Campus. If your classes are not showing up, please contact Erin Davies.
Can Ed Techs have their own Apple Classroom?
No, only the teacher rostered in IC can use Apple Classroom.
Can I see a student’s personal device (laptop, personal iPad, iPhone)?
No, you can only see school issued iPads that are assigned to students.
If a student borrows an iPad from the LC can I see that?
Yes, when students check out iPads from the LC that iPad is assigned to the student until they return it.
Can I lock students into an app so they can’t navigate elsewhere?
Yes, but it has to be an app. If they are on a specific site in Safari or Chrome, you can lock them into that app but they can move freely around the browser.
Can students multi-task while locked down?
You can choose to lock students in two apps and allow them to split screen those apps.
Can students see that I am monitoring their screen?
Yes, a small Apple Classroom logo appears in the top right of their screen when being observed.
What if a student is showing as “Offline” but they are in the room.
Verify they are not using a personal device, have Bluetooth turned off or need an update. If you have verified those 3, try having them reboot their iPad. A reboot is different from turning off and on.
Reboot: Hold down the power button and home button at the same time, and keep holding until the power goes off and keep holding until the Apple logo appears. You could be holding for 1-2 minutes... once the apple logo appears you can let go.
Any advice for first time users?
Yes, model transparency. Tell students you’re going to do it. Tell them why (helping kids focus, help minimize distraction, practice learning a new classroom management tool, etc) and ask them to be patient as you learn. Project your Apple Classroom screen so they can see what you see, at least in the beginning.
