Dr. Josh Holt brings a wealth of experience in a variety of different educational roles to the Learning Development team. He has served as an elementary physical education teacher in Sedalia, MO, a 4th grade classroom teacher at Strafford Elementary and McGregor Elementary, and a Title I math coach at Westport Elementary. He also brings a unique perspective to the team having served as principal at Hollister Middle School and Harrison Elementary. Furthermore, his personal passion for learning is also evident by Josh recently earning his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Lindenwood University.
While learning specialists spend the majority of their time working with teachers and leaders, they ground their support in what is best for students. Dr. Sara Shevchuk, principal at McGregor Elementary, explained how Josh “approaches situations by keeping students at the forefront and how he can support adults for the betterment of students.” Misty Ramsey, principal at Rountree Elementary, added, “His commitment to SPS, teachers and students is evident in his daily work; we are so grateful to have him as a partner of our work.”
A large component of the work of the learning specialists involves providing STEP UP coaching and support to all first and second year educators in the district. Speaking to Josh’s STEP UP support, Alli Baker, an early career teacher of the deaf at Holland Elementary, explained, “Although I have only known Josh for a short period of time, he has been very helpful thus far. We have had two coaching meetings so far and he has challenged me to think critically about my challenges as a first year teacher. Additionally, he has helped me to work through my struggles and plan successful instruction for my students.”
Since learning specialists support numerous sites, it is imperative the support provided is personalized to meet the needs of individual sites, teachers, and leaders. This often requires engaging in new learning opportunities. Dr. Janell Bagwell, principal at Field Elementary, spoke to this when she said, “Josh has transitioned well to his new role. He has worked to provide timely resources and insights. He is inquiring into the International Baccalaureate world so he can better understand how to support IB educators. We appreciate him sharing his talents and skills with us as we continue to grow.”
Relationships create the solid foundation from which learning specialists seek to honor the departmental mission to build capacity in all, and Josh works every day to strengthen the relationships through his authenticity and professionalism. Misty Ramsey shared, “Josh is approachable, upbeat and kind to all those he encounters.” Kara Boehmer, principal at Holland Elementary added, “He is knowledgeable and professional, but also transparent, honest, and humble.” These statements also align with Dr. Shevchuk’s words: “We wouldn’t have been able to navigate everything without his encouragement, calm, and can-do attitude.”
