From teaching at a rural primary school in Kenya to the largest school district in Missouri, Alicia Moore’s journey as an educator has literally spanned the globe. She began her work with Springfield Public Schools in 2006 as an English Language Arts teacher at Glendale High School and joined the Department of Learning Development, formerly the Department of Professional Learning, in 2012. Alicia loves her new role as a learning specialist because it gives her the chance to empower teachers and leaders throughout the system.
Alicia’s commitment to empowering others is reflected in the words of those with whom she works. When asked about Alicia’s commitment to building capacity in all she serves, Rob Kroll, principal of Hillcrest High school, said, “Alicia is an incredible think partner. Anytime we meet I come away thinking deeper about professional learning and have a practical plan to take action. She pushes my thinking and improves any meeting, learning session, or conversation she is a part of.”
As a Coordinator of Learning Development, Alicia is tasked with navigating a variety of support functions including coaching, consulting, and collaborating. Dr. Kirk Slater, principal of Jarrett Middle School, reflected upon her ability to wear these different hats with ease: “She is gifted in connecting with others in identifying their needs. This is supplemented with the ability to partner with others in identifying the solution, key to a team. She consistently creates an environment that is inviting and inclusive. Alicia is well versed in her responsibilities and takes her position very seriously, yet she is approachable and sensitive to those around her. She is articulate and not afraid to voice best practices.”
A major component of Alicia’s support is focused on supporting first and second-year teachers as they develop their roots with Springfield Public Schools. Kayla Froemming, a first-year ELA teacher at Hillcrest High School, expressed her gratitude for Alicia’s support when she explained, “I feel so fortunate to have Alicia to assist and coach me on my path as an educator. From the moment I first met Alicia I felt incredibly comfortable around her, and she has been a wealth of support and information. I’m very thankful to have her on my side!”
Alicia is steadfast in her commitment to ensuring that all learners, adult and student alike, have what they need to grow. Rhonda Wise, a veteran 5th-grade teacher at Holland Elementary, explained, “Currently, Alicia is helping me to explore the specific needs of two of my most challenging students. At my request, she has already been in my classroom three times this year, about once a month. Her first words to me are always, 'How can I help?' or, 'I can help!'”
Dr. Slater summed up Alicia’s support in eight powerful words: “Alicia is a true professional...the whole package!”
