Jazz Band

Thurston's jazz band is a great way to grow as a musician and performer and is offered before school Monday-Friday. The jazz band is an auditioned group, although previous experience in jazz is not required. Students will learn and improve their facility on their instrument, knowledge of jazz theory and history, improvisation skills, how to perform as a member of both a big band and jazz combo, and musical literacy. Students may play in the horn section on Trumpet, Trombone, or Saxophone, or in the rhythm section on Piano, Drum Set, Double Bass, Bass Guitar or Guitar. Students are encouraged to take up one of these instruments as a secondary instrument. Students must participate in another school music ensemble to be eligible for jazz band as the band requires students to perform at an advanced level, although exceptions may be made in certain circumstances.
