5th Grade
What your child will be learning in grade five mathematics
In grade five, students will build their understanding of the place value system by working with decimals up to the hundredths place. Students will also add, subtract, and multiply fractions, including fractions with unlike denominators. They will continue to expand their geometry and measurement skills, learning the concept of volume and measuring the volume of a solid figure. Activities in these areas will include:
Quickly and accurately multiplying multi-digit whole numbers
Dividing numbers with up to four digits by two digit numbers
Using exponents to express powers of 10
Reading, writing, and comparing decimals to the thousandths place
Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals to the hundredths place
Writing and interpreting mathematical expressions using symbols such as parentheses. For example, “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” can be written as 2×(8+7).
Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators (bottom numbers) by converting them to fractions with matching denominators
Multiplying fractions by whole numbers and other fractions
Dividing fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by fractions
Analyzing and determining relationships between numerical patterns
Measuring volume using multiplication and addition

Eureka Math
Springboro uses the Eureka Math Program for K-5 math instruction. Eureka Math is a complete curriculum that carefully sequences the mathematical progressions into expertly crafted modules. It connects math to the real world in ways that take the fear out of math and build student confidence—helping students achieve true understanding lesson by lesson and year after year. Springboro's Math instruction is also complemented by interactive computer technology. In fifth grade, students enjoy learning from their use of MAP Accelerator computer program.
The Eureka Math modules for instruction are listed below. Click on the module link below to access resources and activities connected with that module, including a list of the daily lessons, video explanations for each lesson, "Tips for Parents", student homework pages, and family activities.
Module 1 - Place Value and Decimal Fractions
Module 2 - Multi-Digit Whole Number and Decimal Fraction Operations
Module 3 - Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
Module 4 - Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimal Fractions

Home Activities
For videos, fun home activities, and other resources that are all connected with the math your child is currently learning, just click on the correct module link in the Home Connection section (above)!
From the Ohio Department of Education, here are some real-world activities you can do at home any time:
Use fractions from recipes and other resources around the house and find the corresponding decimal.
Determine the number of ice cubes (or other objects) it takes to fill a container to help your child understand the concept of volume.
Sort objects into three to five categories and ask your child to create a graph based on the categories and explain it to you.
Provide your child with five numbers – for example, 26, 30, 32, 32, 35. Ask your child to find the mean, or average (31); median, or middle number (32); mode, or number that occurs the most (32); and range, the difference between the highest and lowest number (35 - 26 = 9).
Construct and classify triangles (including equilateral, right, scalene, and isosceles triangles) using items that you can find around your house, such as straws, pencils, or crayons.
Digital Program Options for Math Practice
Please be sure to monitor your child's safe use of computers and the internet.MAP Accelerator: A digital math program developed by NWEA and Khan Academy which offers personalized learning pathways complete with lessons, instructional videos and practice problems for students. Personalized pathways are designed based on the student’s most recent math MAP Growth scores. Students who use MAP Accelerator 30+ minutes each week achieve greater-than-projected gains in math with increased scores across all grade levels. Students will access MAP Accelerator through Clever.
Reflex - On Reflex, students practice basic math facts in a fun digital format. Students should work to achieve their green light each day. Students will access Reflex through Clever.
