Read: Why we use assessments
At Springboard Collaborative, we use assessments to find a starting point and set a goal for each student; these are steps 2 and 3 of the FELA. As a Springboard educator, you will assess each scholar at the beginning of programming. Based on this starting point, you can set growth goals for each student, create a Student Action Plan, determine where to start in the lesson plans, and appropriately group students. After the initial assessment, you will assess students throughout programming to monitor progress. The Reading Readiness and Phonics curriculum provides an assessment at the end of each lesson plan to easily monitor progress and adjust student groups accordingly. At the end of programming, you will administer an final assessment to determine scholars' growth over the course of the entire program. This final assessment is step 5 of the FELA. Your site will decide which assessment you will be using.
It is important to use the same assessment for both the beginning and end of programming. Using the same assessment, although not the same passage, will ensure accuracy in determining students' progress. Springboard supports three assessments - DIBELS, Raz Flight Check, and the Reading Readiness Inventory. You'll learn more about these in later professional development sessions.
