A Grade Point Average (GPA) is a measure of academic achievement, based on the final grades a student earns in a course. The school will compute and post an official grade point average in PowerSchool, at the end of each school year. A 7th Semester GPA will be calculated for seniors for the purpose of sending mid-year transcripts to colleges and determining the valedictorian and salutatorian.
HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR GPA
Transfer Students: Transfer students who enroll in SPFHS may receive credit toward graduation for courses taken in properly accredited high schools outside the school district. However, they must meet the same local and state requirements for graduation as students who complete their entire high school program in the district. Students who attend SPFHS less than four years will not receive an official GPA.
New Students to SPFHS: Students new to SPFHS may receive credit toward graduation for courses taken in properly accredited high schools outside the school district. However, only courses taken at SPFHS will be used to calculate the student’s GPA.
All Course GPA: Every subject taken by a student is given equal weight. In determining the All Course GPA, high school subjects that receive a grade and credit will be included. Courses from summer school and other institutions will NOT be included. Each grade is valued according to the following quality point scale:
The quality points for each subject will be multiplied by the number of credits for that subject. The total number of quality points will be divided by the total number of credits for those subjects in which the student has earned a final grade to determine the cumulative average for each student.
Academic GPA will be calculated by the same procedure as described for the All Course GPA. Only full year major academic courses in the following disciplines will be included: English, Mathematics, Science, World Language, and Social Studies.
Collge Prep level subjects will be valued on the same quality point scale as the All Course GPA. Honors and Advanced Placement subjects will be weighted according to the following quality point scale below.
Honor Roll
The Honor Roll at the High School will be in two categories: High Honor Roll and Honor Roll. The Honor list will be issued at the close of each marking period. The criteria will be as follows: High Honor Roll: Straight "A's" if the student is taking four or five subjects, or at least five "A's" and a maximum of one "B". Honor Roll: No mark less than a "B" and at least three "A's". A "P" in a Pass/Fail course will not be considered for the Honor Roll. A student who receives an "Incomplete" will not be eligible for placement on the Honor Roll except for the following condition: A student must present a note from the teacher issuing the "Incomplete" to the Assistant Principal in charge of compiling the Honor Roll within five school days after the mailing of report cards. The note must specify the new grade.
At the close of each marking period, the high school will attempt to have the Honors List published in the local newspaper and posted.
