Avoiding Runaways

Some dogs may become terrified of new situations and run away, especially if they are unfamiliar with their surroundings. Limiting new, loud, or stressful situations helps prevent this from happening. Additionally, being extremely careful when opening doors that access outside will prevent them from darting out the door. When you put your dog in the car, tether the leash so they cannot rush out the car door as soon as it is opened.

When dogs panic, they can sometimes back out of flat collars and regular harnesses. To prevent this, easy walk harnesses and martingale collars can be used. Both of these tools tighten slightly when pressure is put on the leash so they are not able to slip out. Information to fit these tools can be found at the end of this guide. It’s really smart to also back up an easy-walk harness to a collar with a clip or leash.
