An instructional strategy that is designed for learners to learn by example in a more individualized and independent way. Teachers can work directly with the student in order to transfer knowledge. Learners can move as fast or as slow as needed.
Advantages of tutorials:
Can be done on learners own time.
Personalized learning - With this strategy, teachers are able to focus on specific skills needed by that student.
Promotes Engagement - The teacher is able to better engage the child in a concentrated, one-on-one setting. Lessons tend to be shorter in duration which helps students learn. Lessons also typical incorporate interactive elements that increase participation and keep learning fun.
Learner can can take breaks whenever they feel overwhelmed and can repeat information as much as needed without judgement of peers or instructor.
Provides instruction when teacher is unavailable
Disadvantages of tutorials:
Not being able to ask questions to instructor or hear questions from other students.
Time intensive - This strategy can require a lot of time on the teacher’s part whether it’s meeting one-on-one or preparing different self-guided lessons for the individual students.
Time is taken away from other students in the class. It’s also very difficult for teachers to find the time to meet everyone’s needs.
Depending on the subject, information could become outdated or is constantly changing.
Student may not have the self motivation to obtain the lessons/work.
When it comes to learning, there's just about a video for everything there is to do. All you have to do is go to Youtube and you can find just about any instructional or tutorial video there is. To prove this, here's a tutorial video I found on Youtube about how to make a tutorial video.www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDliEq_0qeQ Horner
Articulate 360 storyline is a tutorial device that allows the leaner to work on his or her own pace as well as take a test and gives feedback if the learner answers incorrectly. There are also links built in to give additional help and practice once they have completed the lesson. It's a lot of work for the educator to set up, but if done successfully, it is a good tutorial tool for the learner. Horner
Teachers can record their voice and/or computer screens. I’ve found that this platform is easy to use. Teachers can explain, draw, or label the information as it is being recorded. Screencastify and other similar apps essentially allows a teacher to clone themselves for students. Teachers can essentially record their teaching and use their computer screen like an interactive whiteboard. As teachers add their recording to other digital material, students get access to the teacher’s one-on-one teaching without her being physical present. This also makes it easier to extend student learning outside of the classroom or use as at-home review. - Collins
Nearpod is one of my favorite sites. This tool allows teachers to create teacher-paced, live lessons or student-paced lessons that can include slides, teacher recordings, audio, video, links, and embedded material. Nearpod also contains many interactive elements. These elements can be added and used to teach a specific skill and engage the student. With Nearpod, teachers can quickly indivisulize instruction by assigning pre-made, teacher-made, or teacher-edited lessons. By using Nearpod in the classroom, teachers can offer engaging lessons that consist of a variety of elements to increase student understanding of the material. Students benefit from cohesive lessons that contain all the resources and interactive features in one sequential delivery system. - Collins
This site has amazing virtual learning and field trips in the areas of science, technology, arts, geography, and natural history. As students choose their topic, Google presents it as a slide show style experience complete with text that accompanies the pictures. Students can click on the pictures to experience the virtual element. The expeditions allow teachers to individualize learning for the students and offer them a student centered, self-paced, and immersive experience. With a range of topics, teachers can select just the right content to enhance student learning. GGoogle Expeditions allows for good use of the tutorial strategy in allowing students to pursue what interests them within their content area. Google Expeditions has a plethora of lesson plans and resources for teachers. Many of these plans are ready to assign to students as a clickable PDF or import into another platform. The pages contain text, photos, links to additional informational sites, and linked virtual field trips. These lesson plans save time while encouraging the tutorial learning style. - Collins
Khan Academy is a learning platform for students containing interactive lessons. Teacher can assign student-paced lessons, videos, and articles based on student need. The program covers many subjects. As with other similar programs, teachers can use the focused skill lessons and truly individualize the learning experience. The platform provides the use and assessment data for students so that teachers can monitor progress and make informed decisions as to the next steps in teaching.
