A Sustained Investigation is like a tree branch. You ask a question that you then investigates via the artwork. From one piece to the next the inquiry (line of questioning) evolves. You might not know where the line of inquiry may lead.

Your students do not need 15 different works for their sustained investigation. They need 15 *images*. It could be fifteen works, but it could also include detail views, evidence of planning and experimentation (sketchbook work, diagrams, etc.) as some of the images. I was able to come up with ten images from five art pieces and my sketchbook planning for the AP institute homework of a mini-sustained investigation. Don't get hung up on the number of final art pieces; simply ask your students (repeatedly) "how are you going to fill 15 images with what you've done for this investigation?"
Your students may use pieces from their sustained investigation for their selected works, so they could overlap. More importantly, make sure that no matter what you choose for the selected works, they are the five best pieces your student has created.
