I came to the realization that I love education at around age 12 when we took my brother to college at the University of Maryland. Those red brick buildings cemented my future.
After graduating high school in the farming town of Modesto, CA I decided to attend Point Loma Nazarene University on the merit and reputation of their teacher training program. The program lends its students to the surrounding communities of Chula Vista, National City, and Lemon Grove in an effort to partner with school districts who would benefit from having more "boots on the ground". These experiences redefined my expectations of education and made me realize that education is not only something that I love, but is something that should be accessible for all and is going to be the only way to truly sustain peace, democracy, and our planet. It became my mission from that point on to give students the tools they need to be critically thinking and informed adults.
When I received my teaching credential in 2009 California was in the height of a recession and teaching jobs were scarce. I was a substitute teacher from 2009 to 2013 for any classroom in districts from Chula Vista to Modesto where my reputation had earned me long term positions. My reputation in San Marcos Unified finally landed me a permanent position at Woodland Park Middle School, where I have remained to this day.
While at Woodland Park I have taught ELA, math, science, and explore 6. I piloted the 6th grade art program, I have piloted the newest math and ELA programs, and have been on the curriculum writing teams for ELA and Science. Additionally, I have been the general education pilot teacher for our 6th grade co-taught ELA and 6th/7th grade co-taught science classes. I am known on campus as someone who will attempt anything with an unfailing work ethic and enthusiasm.
Currently, I am the science team chair as our department undergoes official curriculum roll out for NGSS standards and am a 6th and 7th grade science general education co-teacher. I completed my MA Ed./Admin so that I could grow into a more effective and capable leader for the benefit of our student population.
When I'm not at school, the light of my life is my lovely family: my husband and daughter.
