Welcome to the Latinx Literature Library! Through generous philanthropic funds, I have been able to purchase over 1,000 books written by and about Latinxs. This library is designed to support United States Latino Literature (USLL), an ELA3/ELA4 academic credit (ehem, the only one like it in the entire United States) offered by Jackie Madrigal at Shawnee Mission North, but the books are also available for checkout for all students and staff in the Shawnee Mission School District. To check out a book, simply click on "REQUEST BOOK" located at the bottom of every page!
I've been an avid reader all of my life, but at the tender age of 13 when I found Viva la Raza: The Struggle of the Mexican-American People by Elizabeth Sutherland Martinez and Enriqueta Longeaux y Vásquez hidden in the stacks at my local library, everything changed. An entire genre of literature opened up before my eyes that was unknown to me. I devoured Latinx literature like my life depended on it. It kinda did. The stories and histories of my ancestors did not originate on the Mayflower, and I struggled to find a thorough, accurate, and inclusive reflection of myself in my formal K-12 education. The public library became my teacher. Fast forward several decades, and now I am humbled to share some of those stories with you through my library.
I first learned about Esteban Castillo, the author, on Instagram. I tried some of his recipes and I put him on my notifications! Whether you're a seasoned chef or you burn water, you'll find a recipe you love. Recently my daughter and I made churros from this cookbook. We ate so many that we had an Abuelita chocolate sauce hangover the next day. Don't say I didn't warn you!

Reyna Grande tells the most breathtaking story of her migration from Iguala, Guerrero, México to the United States. When I read this book, I literally wanted to reach through the pages and wring an old lady's neck. For real! The prose makes you feel like you're right next to Reyna running through the desert. Immigration is not black and white, and this book is all of the gray in between.

Karla Cornejo Villavicencio has written a MAS 👏🏽TER 👏🏽PIECE 👏🏽! After that horrible American Dirt (or as I like to call it American Trash) was so highly acclaimed, I regained my trust in the universe after reading The Undocumented Americans. Authentic and uncensored. She's my girl crush.

This is the poetry collection I needed when I was in high school. I see so much of myself in Citizen Illegal by José Olivarez. After I read his book, I was fangirling so much I slid into his DMs! I just said, "I really love your book!" and he said, "Thanks! Much appreciated!" That's it. Nothing else. Please don't tell anyone. That's embarrassing.

I'm currently a sophomore at Shawnee Mission East, and I wish I had a library at my school like the one my mom has at her school! The good thing is that she always brings home books for me that she thinks I might like. One that I recommend to my amiguis is We Are Not From Here by Jenny Torres Sanchez. It's the story of Pulga, Chico, and Pequeña and their journey from Guatemala to the United States. They go on an incredibly hard trek to start a new life in a new country, just like millions of people. I liked how that even though they were struggling through this hard time, they were still united and found a way through their hardships. When one felt weak, the others stepped up and supported each other. My mom and I wouldn't be here if the people in our family didn't take a risk in a new country, so immigration is a topic I like to read about.
