I will be sending you a slide presentation next week with all there is to know about my class this year. SMSD Strategic Plan
Join a Shawnee Mission School District Action Team! As this new year begins, we are looking forward to advancing the work on our district Strategic Plan. (Click here for information about the Strategic Plan). This was developed by our community and adopted by the Board of Education in 2024. The Shawnee Mission School District is now entering its second year of putting this plan into action, through the work and collaboration of the community. Several Action Teams will kick off their efforts this year and we are seeking volunteer participants to engage in this important work to implement the strategies and actualize the steps within the Strategic Plan. The SMSD seeks parent, community, and SMSD team members to volunteer.

🌟SMSD Teacher of the Year!
🍎 Nominate a Highlands staff member for the SMSD Teacher of the Year!
To be eligible to be the SMSD Teacher of the Year, teachers must meet the following criteria:
Completed at least 3 years in SMSD
Completed at least 5 years in the profession
Currently serve as a teacher (i.e. must have a roster of students)
📌 Needed: Site Council 25-26 Members
I am looking for parents, Highlands community members, and students to serve on the 25-26 Site Council this school year. Please email me (lauralahue@smsd.org) if you are interested in serving in this capacity! Your time is very much appreciated.
What is Site Council? The Kansas School Finance Law requires that each school in every district establish a School Site Council. The Site Council plays a critical role in supporting the school improvement process and providing feedback. It is essential that parents/community members serve roles on this council to gain accurate and valuable input.
What do we do at Site Council meetings? Laura will provide updates on the SMSD strategic plan, WIGS, Portrait of a Graduate and how it relates to goals of Highlands. Progress on our building goals are communicated, as well as updates to school wide initiatives to help meet goals around student achievement, growth, and overall well-being. Student guests, teacher guests, district guests and/or community guests attend meetings as applicable. Site Council members are asked for their feedback, questions, input, and idea generation.
When are Site Council meetings? You do not have to attend every meeting (if there are scheduling conflicts) in order to serve on the site council!
