Homework
HOMEWORK:
3 THINGS EACH EVENING:
- Read every night! Read in a cozy spot. Your child can read to a parent, pet, plant, plush, or younger sibling. They can call and read to a grandparent or friend ... This should be at least 10 minutes. Reading material does not matter. If it's a struggle, trying 'You read to me and I'll read to you' - Maybe you read all the sentences on the left pages, they read all the passages on the right side of the book.
- Practice Math facts every night. Flash cards have been sent home for this, and we will also be posting some fun alternative activity options for math fact practice. Some workbook pages will come home marked "HW"
- Spelling review: which can include flashcards (made at home) or Spelling City games. There will be a written practice page sent home most evenings.
3 THINGS EACH WEEK:
- TOP DOG Letter. When we have a Student of the Week Presentation, your child will come home with a "_____ IS A TOP DOG!" letter template. Please assist and encourage your child to write 3 neat and "SUPER" sentences. (Begin with a uppercase letter, end with punctuation, and use invisible "spaghetti and meatball" spacing). Encourage them to add color or drawings neatly. They can even draw their friend an appropriate picture on the back of the letter, if they WISH to. These will be due back on Fridays and assembled into a keepsake gift given at the end of the year. My kids (even my college student) still have their 1st grade books on their bookshelves and occasionally look through them!
- Rapid Word Chart
Please send in a new DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) book each Monday. Once a new book has been sent in, your child will bring home their book from the previous week.
EACH MONTH:
Monthly Reading Challenge. Oct - April. A packet with info and directions will come home. The packet includes a reading log, mini/extra 'challenges' for rewards, and a simple story map/report.
The Blue D.O.G. (Daily Organization Guide) Folder will come home every day to be reviewed, emptied, and returned the following day.
Our Firsties will begin copying their assignments on a weekly Homework Sheet after the first half of the year / when they are ready. This will be stamped by a teacher to verify the information is correct.
Show and Tell:
The First Friday of each month. Students should bring in an interesting item to share. This should not be an expensive or fragile item. It should be able to fit inside a labeled bag inside of the student's backpack. This should not simply be a toy. Many times there will be a theme requested for the item. If yoour child does not have a themed item, it could be an item related to their interests, hobbies, trips, etc. The students should be prepared to talk about their item - what it is, what it does, where/when/how they got it or for who, why it is important to them and/or how it fits the theme, etc. I anticipate the following dates and will try to send a reminder through the Sunday Snapshot and/or Seesaw prior to the date.
September 1: 'About me' or 'summer activity/adventure'
October 6: Fall/Halloween
November 3: What they're thankful for or a Thanksgiving tradition
December 1: Winter, christmas tradition, or favorite decor/ornament
January 5: Favorite Christmas present (school appropriate)
February 2: Something they love
March 1: tba
April 5: tba
May 3: tba
