MYSTERY READER information

In  the past, First Grade has always enjoyed classroom visits from parents who act as “Mystery Readers.”  We are excited to invite the parents and family members back into the classroom this year.   You may sign up to visit our classroom using this SignUpGenius Link:

SUG :   (Parent/Guardian eyes only!!)

**1G time slot is now Thursdays at 12:10 pm**

Please only choose one date for now because we would like to give each family an opportunity to participate.  Moms and dads can read a story together if they choose.  We ask that you pick only one book and try to choose one that would appeal to both boys and girls.  Please also include the title of your book in the comment area on the Sign Up Genius so that we can avoid duplicates.   Once every student has had a special person sign up, parents, siblings, grandparents etc are welcome to also sign up.

We encourage you to have fun and be creative with this!  Wear a costume if you would like, and/or use props!  Your reading can also be simple of course, whatever you are comfortable with!  The value is found in the story, being read to, and the excitement of the students seeing their parent(s) and sharing them with the class!  If you choose to participate in this activity, please do not tell your child when you are coming in.  It would be really great to see the look of surprise on their face when they see that you are the mystery Reader!  Please let us know if you have any questions.  We hope you will enjoy this fun and exciting way to be involved in the classroom this year!

***  You MUST be VIRTUS certified to visit the classroom as a Mystery Reader.  The link is below to start this process if you have not done this before.

You can contact Brenda Bell if you have any questions:  bbell@smsch.org

This is truly a beloved 1st grade activity.  My own children can all still tell you (with exacting detail) what book I read when they were in 1st grade, what I wore/brought to class, what the class liked about it, etc.   Our Firsties will be SO happy for Mystery reader time!!

UPDATE!!

IMPORTANT!  If you are uncomfortable coming into the classroom or are unable to fit our time slot into your schedule, you are of course welcome to send me a video of yourself reading a story.  This option, however, has some legal requirements  Please read this notice for information regarding obtaining Mystery Reader story time permissions!

We have been given permission to show parent-read book videos until December of 2022, provided that we...

a) Use Penguin / Random House books.  Please check the publishing company of your preferred reading choice. If it is not a Penguin Random House book, you can find titles on their website.  https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books

b) Complete a permission request form.

Penguin Random House now REQUIRES that you complete this form in order for permission to be granted for reading Penguin Random House content aloud in virtual learning environments.  Once you submit the form, you should be automatically authorized.  You do not need to wait for a confirmation email.  Please do adhere to the guidelines of the program.

THANK YOU!!!  Our Firsties LOVE this activity and look forward to our "next episode" each week!!  :)
