Year 9

Musical Theatre and RaP (Rhythm and Poetry)

We will start off by studying the history of Musical Theatre, and looking at how it has changed and evolved over time. We learn about key Musical Theatre composers and the impact they have had on the genre. Finally we will look at how Musical Theatre work, completing class performances of Musical Theatre songs and scenes.

From there we are going to look at the musical Hamilton, where we will start to compare RaP styles, write RaP lyrics, and rap to a given beat.


Music from Around the World

We are now going to have an in-depth look at Reggae and the Pentatonic Scale, focusing on Chine.


We start by exploring the music of Jamaica, looking at Reggae. We investigate the history; Rastafarianism; the role of politics, and the influence of Bob Marley. We then explore the key features of Reggae, looking at the rhythm, harmony, melody, etc. that makes up this style of music.

Working as a class you will then learn how to play the chord pattern and rhythm to 'Three Little Birds'

From here we travel around the world to China where we explore the role of the pentatonic scale in music. We learn how to play a a song that fits into this theme and then students will work towards completing their own compositions that use the Chinese tradition and pentatonic scale.

Music Technology: Creating EDM

In this time you will return to music technology and continue looking at how to use technology to create music. We will start by revising prior knowledge of music technology. We investigate more depth in how Cubase and other DAWs produce and manipulate sound and end by producing a simple dance-based track. We will also further develop knowledge of key terms in Music technology

End of Year Project

We will end the year my working on an end of year project that will tie together a multitude of the skills learned throughout the year and apply them on this one project.
