We are fortunate that, as the result of our deep roots in Paris, we have been able to forge very close relationships with the number of outstanding universities and institutions here in Paris. These partnerships provide students in the JYA program not only with outstanding course choices, but also with the opportunity to be an active participant in Paris’ vibrant student life. The students you meet in your courses at our partner institutions will become invaluable resources, guides through the at times bewildering bureaucratic maze of the French university system, and eventually friends—sometimes for life.
Our partner institutions include:
Located in the 13th arrondissement, on the banks of the Seine, the structure of this Paris university most closely resembles that of an American university. UPC offers bachelors, masters and PhD programs across a broad range of disciplines in the sciences, social sciences and humanities catering to roughly 63,000 students. From its inception, this institution has sought to make the boundaries between disciplines significantly more porous than in most other French universities, and has also developed a number of interdisciplinary programs that often appealed to our students. The core of this institution consists of repurposed buildings that once housed flour mills, tile factories and storage depots; a fascinating and vibrant neighborhood—unlike any other arrondissement in Paris has risen around the university to meet the needs of students staff and faculty.
Founded in 1243 (yes, really), This university has a distinguished history of excellence, particularly in the humanities. In 2018, the Sorbonne fused with another distinguished Paris university (Université Pierre et Marie Curie) Known as a center of excellence in STEM disciplines. As a result, this new entity, Sorbonne Université, now offers students in the Smith program a very broad range of courses across a wide variety of disciplines. Sorbonne Université hosts 55,000 students across a number of campuses distributed across Paris.
This is France’s premier institution for the social sciences, where many well known leaders have been trained (and teach). Offering a broad range of courses in Political Science, Economics, Sociology, History, Law and Environmental Studies, Sciences Po boasts an international student body 15000 strong, nearly half of whom are international students. In addition to its Paris campuses, ScPo has campuses spread out over France, including a center in Reims where its NorthAMerican Studies and African Studies centers are housed.
This specialized school of architecture, adjacent to and affiliated with UPC, is one of France’s premier—and highly competitive— architecture schools. Students in the JYA program are welcome to take courses ranging from architecture studio to material science to urban planning in an exciting setting. Unlike architecture training in the US, which normally involves six years of preparation (four years of undergraduate studies, followed by two years in an MA program in architecture), students completing a bachelor's degree at ENSAVdS graduate as practicing architects. For students in our program interested in planning, landscape studies, architecture, or the city, ENSAVdS provides outstanding opportunities.
This partner institution provides studio art students with the opportunity to further their training through A2 semester advanced painting studio. In addition, students interested in an introductory studio course are welcomed into a beginning drawing/painting course, normally offered in the Fall. This Academy has been training artists for over a century: many well illustrious artists (Chagall, Modigliani, Bourdelle, Foujita, Calder, Friesz, Lempicka, Léger, Bourgeois, Miró, Soutine, among others) have crossed the transom of this well known Montparnasse atelier.
