Students in the Paris program, regardless of their interest, are part of a single JYA cohort. That said, the program encompasses two tracks, each adapted to the interests and needs of particular majors.
The JYA track:
Students in the humanities, studio art and the social sciences will generally follow this track.
The SAP track:
Students in STEM fields will normally follow the Sciences à Paris (SAP) track.
Students in either track are required to follow an intensive French language course in the first semester. Two such courses are available, and you will be placed in the one that best matches your level of French on arrival and your particular interests.
Students in the SAP track are also required to participate in the SAP seminar in the fall, a multidisciplinary seminar that brings together students from various STEM disciplines around a single topic. This seminar is required of SAP students, but is open to students from non-STEM disciplines wishing to engage with the topic from their disciplinary perspective.
Information on the SAP seminar and intensive French language courses can be found here.
Other than the courses described above, students are free to choose from any of the courses offered at our center (Reid Hall) either through the Smith JYA program or in conjunction with our consortial partners at Reid Hall. In consultation with the Program Director and your advisor, you will craft a program of study that will allow you to progress through your major, satisfy your intellectual curiosity, and take advantage of courses that are only available here in Paris.
The Paris program is eager to welcome students from any major. Thanks to our extensive network of in-house faculty, tutors and partner universities, you will find courses that dovetail with your major and will expand your intellectual and professional horizons.
