Why host families?
By default, students in the Smith College program reside in private homes in Paris with carefully selected and diverse families and individuals who are dedicated to helping students deepen their knowledge of the French language and culture. Boarding with host families has long proven to be one of the most rewarding aspects of the year abroad. Living with a French host family leads both to profound cross-cultural awareness and to rich and lasting friendships. All homestays are located within Paris city walls and near one or more subway or bus stations.
Who are our host families?

What are the other options?
For students wishing to live on their own, other options are available, including:
Cité Universitaire : A wonderful place to meet international students (about 5000 students from France but also all around the world).
A "Chambre de bonnes" (formerly “maid’s quarters”), located in front of the Panthéon
a small studio next to Sciences-Po in the heart of Quartier Latin
Meals & Meal Allowances
Students normally eat breakfast and dinner with their host families five days a week, the cost of which is included in the program fee. Students also receive a monthly allowance (~€350/mo) to cover the cost of lunch during the periods when classes are in session. Students who choose to live independently will receive an extra-stipend of 75€/week to cover the cost of additional meals.
Holidays (for you and your host family)
During the year-end holidays and on spring break, students must vacate their rooms. Most students use this time to travel in France, in Europe, and beyond.
