"While history classes at Smith focus on historiographical critique (how is this history biased, whose voices are included/excluded, how is it being written about or presented) and how we can develop new or more nuanced understandings of a particular moment, Sorbonne history courses are about what happened and when. The teaching style is nearly all lecture (about dates, places, people, wars, and speeches) and students sometimes engage in document analysis for homework (rather than extensive readings, as history students at Smith would be used to). The methodology for written work is very specific (dissertation, plan détaillé) and Smith students will benefit from the help of a tutor to keep up." - JYA Student 2023-2024
History majors at Smith can take courses either at Université de Paris Cité or Sorbonne Université. This decision is made by the program directors given the current distribution of majors each academic year. Both universities offer robust history curricula with a variety of courses.
