While there are many instruments in the String Family, our program is designed to offer quality music instruction on four:
Violin
Viola
Cello
Bass
These particular instruments come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. In order to determine what size each student musician needs, their height and arm length will be measured. Here are some common sizes:
◻ 1/8 (Bass)
◻ 1/4 (Bass)
◻ 1/2 (Violin, Cello, Bass)
◻ 3/4 (Violin, Cello, Bass)
◻ 4/4 (Violin, Cello)
◻ 13” (Viola)
◻ 14” (Viola)
◻ 15” (Viola)
◻ 15.5” (Viola)
Fortunately, there are a lot of places where you can acquire a string instrument. Unfortunately, not all of these places are reputable and may provide string instruments (and accessories) of questionable quality. To participate in the String Orchestra Program in Stow-Munroe Falls, all students need to rent or purchase their own string instrument. We strongly recommend renting an instrument directly from a music store. Avoid purchasing until later, as young student musicians will continue to grow. While researching, look for key words such as “rent to own,” “outfit,” and “in-house repairs.” Renting from a brick-and-mortar store is best, but you may ship an instrument to your home address. Here is a list of good places to look:
A Couple Things
Please DO NOT purchase instruments from Amazon or Walmart. Trust us. These instruments are often poorly made, which will inhibit your students’ learning and overall experience in orchestra. If you have any questions regarding which instrument to order, please email the director and she will be happy to help you.
If your family is unable to acquire an instrument for your student, please contact the director immediately. We have a limited fleet of school instruments available to utilize during the school day. Please note that students cannot take these instruments home yet.
Student Musicians MUST have their string instruments by Friday, September 19th. Notify the director immediately if you cannot obtain an instrument by this date. We will be creative in class until then.
