Self Advocacy

What is self advocacy?

  • Self advocacy is knowing what you need and asking for it.

  • You need to able to ask appropriate questions whenever you are confused instead of waiting for people to come to you.

  • If you don't get a grade you were hoping for, you can at least ask your teacher if there is extra credit, or a way to better your grade.

Why is it important?

  • Your teachers will have a lot more students than in an elementary class size of about 24 students.

  • You will need to be on top of your own schoolwork and grades.

  • Your teachers mess up too. Sometimes things get in school loop that aren't meant to be there (a false grade, a zero), but just TELL THEM, and they will be happy to fix it.

  • Speaking up is the only way your teacher will know you need more time.

If you ever need an extension on an assignment, you must speak up for yourself (prior to the night before your assignment is due).

Student led conferences

  • Student lead conferences are a huge stride toward independence.

  • You will join a conference with your parents and your homeroom teacher.

  • You will have time to prepare, and during the conference, your teacher will ask you a list of questions about how the year is going.

  • It's your academic life and achievements, and you're the one that knows your goals and progress the best.
