Turn in .psd documents to Hello World folder
This tutorial will give you practice with some animation fundamentals, as well as refresh your Photoshop knowledge. We will do this together in class, but the basic steps and some key terms are outlined below.
Create a new Photoshop document: 800 x 600 px, RGB color, 150 dpi
Save the document using the naming convention YourLastName_helloWorld.psd
Give the background a color using the Paint Bucket tool (set the color in the bottom of the Tool Bar).
Select another color. Using the text tool, write the letters that spell "Hello" with each letter on its own layer. You can put "World" on it's own layer, and change the color if you like.
Navigate Window menu > Timeline and select create frame animation. Set the duration to .1 seconds.
In the first frame, turn off the visibility of all layers except "H." Duplicate the frame using the icon next to the trash can in the bottom-left of the timeline. In the new frame, turn turn on the visibility for "E." Continue with the rest of "Hello."
Duplicate the last frame (entire "Hello") and change the duration to .2 seconds. Duplicate that frame and turn on visibility for "World." Duplicate that frame and turn visibility off. This will give you a "blink" effect. Do this two more times; feel free to create versions of "World" in different colors. The last frame should be a blink "off" of "World," i.e. visibility is turned off.
Save your project!
Now we'll create a tween. In the layers panel, duplicate the "World" layer and rename it "World Tween." (If you had multiple versions, you still need to make a new one; change the color again if you like).
Create two new frames in the timeline with the "World_Tween" layer visible. Set the duration of both to "No Delay." Select the second frame, and use the Move Tool (V) to move the word offscreen.
Select both frames, then click the Tween button (next to the Duplicate Frame button). Experiment with number of frames - notice how the animation looks different at 5 frames of tweening than 10 frames.
Save your project and upload it as a .psd document to the Hello World folder.
