PD and Meetup Dates

There will be a professional development meet-up for 1818 Statistics instructors in the Fall of 2023 on Tuesday, November 14th at 2-4 pm and then a follow up meeting in the Spring of 2024 on Monday, February 12th at 2-4pm.  The meet-up is for you to compare notes with fellow instructors and to discuss what resources you would like or can share and a topic for the spring professional development time. I'm thinking of professional development being about hypothesis testing and p-values and students' difficulties with and insights with those topics, and your solutions, but I am very open to other suggestions.

These meetings, or some appropriate substitute if you cannot make them, are required by 1818. I much welcome your feedback on the timing and how these meetings can most benefit you.

Discipline-Specific Resources

This will be updated throughout 2023-24.

Free online text for AP statistics. (Diez, et al)  The webpage includes many resources including labs to guide students through using R for most chapters, statistics calculator instructions/cheatsheets, R datasets for homework, slides, videos.

Free online text for 1300 by the above authors with similar resources.

Free online statistics textbook by SLU's Clair and Speegle (this is geared towards a higher level but there are some good resources here, including the datasets)

My webpage with more resources for 1300.Some are repeats of what is here, but it is what I am sharing with on campus  instructors. It includes datasets, rmarkdowns for lectures.

An interesting article on what should be changed in STAT101.

What to Expect for Site Visits

Site visits are designed to provide a connection between 1818 statistics instructors and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Saint Louis University.  1818 statistics instructors should expect to be visited by a 1818 faculty liaison almost every year.  A 1818 faculty liaison will contact the 1818 statistics instructor by email to set up a day and time for the visit that works well for the instructor.  During the visit the liaison may want to briefly address the visited class, however the majority of the the visit time will be spent with the liaison observing a typical class day. If time permits, the class and other matter pertaining to the course, such as exams or R, will be discussed after the observation. A form describing the visit will then be completed by the 1818 faculty liaison with copies sent to both the 1818 office and the 1818 instructor.
