Our interactive small group format would not be possible without our many volunteers! We invite all fourth year students and especially those applying in Pediatrics or a combined program to assist with clerkship orientation if time allows. Our pediatric elective directors have been very supportive in counting orientation facilitation as a rotation activity vs. an excused absence. There are lots of opportunities for participation!
Skill station leader. We have 8 skill stations scheduled in two time blocks 8:50-10 and 11-11
Day 1 prep leader. After general orientation we split students based on starting site to go over practical day 1 prep with a facilitator. (11:30-12:30)
"Welcome Crew." We ask senior learners scheduled for a given site to take the M3 "under your wing." Eg. we might ask an M4 scheduled for pediatric cardiology elective to meet an M3 starting on cardiology week after orientation and before starting in clinic. ~12:30-1
Sign-up for a specific orientation and task on the planning document and follow instructions
Accept orientation facilitator calendar invite from Pediatric_Student_Education outlook account
Arrive on time or a little early
Enjoy! These really tend to be fun
Touch base with us regarding:
Questions that came up. It’s a good way for us to identify things that might not be clear in the virtual orientation or Canvas materials
Any suggestions you might have to improve orientation for the next block
Update the facilitator guide with any tips or suggestions that might be helpful for future students
Come back!
Review clerkship onboarding and be ready to answer student questions. Please feel free to defer any questions you do not know the answer to!
LOR opportunities. We collect detailed orientation feedback as part of ongoing quality improvement efforts. We are able to include both volunteering as orientation facilitator and specific comments in the department LOR. Since a couple of our faculty members regularly assist with orientation, participation provides an additional opportunity for interacting with them.
SLU legacy opportunities. All the skill stations are an ongoing work in progress. We invite interested students to work on further development of the stations as well as associated individual study modules and (for some topics) additional group activities during the core topic series. Several topics might offer opportunities for scholarly work.
