Performing general procedures of a physician is an entrustable professional activity for entering residency. Some of the common pediatric procedures include vaccine administration, intravenous catheter placement, lumbar puncture, foley catheter placement, incision and drainage. Opportunity to observe and/or participate in most of these is highly variable. We strongly encourage you to take the opportunity if it does arise.

As the most common procedure in pediatrics, vaccine administration is the exception and the only procedure required during the clerkship. All clerkship students will administer at least two vaccines. 1-2 to "Baby Orange" during clerkship orientation and at least one to a pediatric patient. There are plenty of opportunities: general ambulatory clinic (all vaccines), well baby nursery (HepB), adolescent clinic (adolescent vaccines), all settings (influenza vaccine, catch-up vaccines, and COVID vaccine)

Injection Techniques
Injection techniques (8min). The demonstration is with an adult. The technique is the same for pediatric patients except for the location of injection. A pediatric video is on our project list.
