6th Grade

Monday, September 11th

The students worked so hard on their Engineering and Design Process posters! I am so excited about all of the hard work the students showed through these posters! Next to this, are some of the examples of posters that they were able to make.

This week the students are starting to put the Engineering and Design Process into practice. We are getting to work on our Mars Rover challenge. The students are given a set amount of supplies and they have to make a lander that will keep the aliens, coming to give us the best dessert, from falling out. The aliens are ping-pong balls and the lander is dropped from a distance of about 20 feet.

The students can only build below the lander and we are discussing the best shock-absorbing materials for their mission. I am so excited to see the students put into practice the Engineering and Design Process and watch their creativity shine through this project. Check back to see some of these examples next week!!

In 6th-grade science, we are making posters about the Engineering and Design process. The students are coming up with clever ways to show the steps, description, and how it goes from one step to the next. The students have loved getting to work in groups and collaborate on a design that best suits all the groups! Check back at the end of the week to see pictures of the completed projects!

Monday, August 28th

This week in science we are starting to go over the Engineering and Design Process. Last week, the students took a pretest, and they were able to correct their answers, to see what they know already and start to look at what they are going to be learning!

We will have started to define the steps of the Engineering and Design Process and the questions they will ask that go along with each step. This includes what the criteria and constraints of the problem are.

Later on, the students will be doing a project and going through the steps of the Engineering and Design Process. We have also been discussing different scientists and engineers who go through the steps of the Engineering and Design Process. We had a conversation about how they may not be explicitly saying what the steps are, but they go through the steps just the same. It has been fun seeing their interest in all of the scientists and we will continue to discuss them throughout the year!

I am excited for the students to continue to learn about the Engineering and Design Process!

Welcome to 6th Grade Science! Below you will find an overview of 6th-grade science. Please know that some things are subject to change throughout the school year. I am so excited about the school year!
