We finished off our Church history unit by reading in Scripture what Jesus told his Apostles before his Ascension. We also spent time discussing our God-given purpose versus what we believe will make us happy. We will conclude this unit with an open book test over lessons 13-15 on Monday. Students were able to take notes during class on what the test will be over.

We also planned our LAST school Mass! We can't believe that this will be our last one. We worked hard to make sure that all students had a part. Please join us on Wednesday at 8:30am.

It has been a busy few weeks, and I apologize for not updating this sooner! We have spent the past few weeks finishing up learning about Church history from 1000 AD-present. We have covered many important topics during this time period including the Reformation, the rise of communism,  and the role that science plays in our faith. With each time period, we have started to practice taking notes while listening to a lecture in order to prepare us for the future. I have been impressed with the focus that students have had as they work to hear and write the important information.

This week we took an open book test over lessons 6-7 which covers 500-1000 AD. We then started learning about the Church's history from 1000-1500 AD. We continue to spend each day with prayer. I enjoy being able to engage in this routine and see students take this seriously!

We created our timeline over 500-1000 AD. This is available on Google Classroom. We also learned about the impact of monasteries during this time and the work of Pope St. Gregory the Great, St. Augustine of Canterbury, and St. Boniface.

We have been learning about the history of the Church from 100-500 AD. During this week, we learned about St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and St. Benedict. Students ended the week with a timed open book test over the information we have learned in lessons 4-5.

This week we learned about the history of the church from 100-500 AD. We emphasized how Roman emperors determined the spread of Christianity through their denial or acceptance of Christianity. Fr. Ryan joined us on Friday for Father Friday to answer our questions about our faith!

We wrapped up learning about St. Paul by creating our own mini podcasts. Students listened to the Thought of the Day with Fr. Frank on 102.5 FM. Students picked a letter from St. Paul, analyzed the main message he was conveying and wrote a 1 minute podcast to share that message in a modern and meaningful way!

St. Peter and St. Paul were the focus of our learning this week! We discussed St. Peter and the significance of the papal insignia after we read several Scripture passages and analyzed St. Peter's role in them. We also mapped out St. Paul's missionary journeys and analyzed sacred art to find the scriptural significance in it. We will do a quick project on St. Paul's epistles before moving onto 100-500 AD!

We finished our Bible studies on the Acts of the Apostles this week and began discussing the history of the early Church. Throughout the 2,000 years of history, we will be making a timeline to help us keep track of all the events.

We also went on our service trip to Mary's Helping Hands. We were able to help with a variety of tasks including organizing clothes and books, stuffing envelopes, and more! They were very grateful for our help! Our class had a wonderful reflection discussion upon return to school!

We welcomed Robin from Mary's Helping Hands into our classroom to share information about the organization with us. You can find the slides from her presentation below. We continue to learn about the Acts of the Apostles through our Bible studies. Ask your child about some of our discussion topics!

We have been learning about the early Church through Bible studies focused on the Acts of the Apostles. Students have been meeting in small groups to discuss how Scripture connects to our lives today. I have loved hearing students grow in their faith in this way. Check out these pictures of students working in their Bible study groups!

We have started learning about the connections between the Old and New Testaments and how that leads to the Catholic Church today. We discussed how Jesus was priest, prophet, and king. This led us into the beginning of our Bible studies focused on the book of Acts. Students work in small groups to discuss the application of scripture into our lives today. Today we learned about Saul and how God is always looking to help EVERYONE!

I place a large importance on learning different ways to pray and putting that into practice in order to help students have those skills in place as they age. Our class determined that it is important to them to be able to make decisions. I value this and wanted to honor this right away by letting our class determine our class prayer routine. Our class decided to include a variety of forms of prayer. We start every religion class with prayer and it is a great way to center us for the rest of the day!

Below you will find our schedule of prayer routines!

I was so impressed with 8th grade and them leading our school Mass. Thank you to everyone for sharing their talents with our school community. We spent the rest of the week reflecting on what it means to say "We Pray, We Learn, We Serve". We reflected on how we can increase in each of these areas this year and then made artwork to add to our class walls.  Check out their work below!

We have spent this week filling our prayer journals with lots of great resources! Our prayer journal will serve as a "toolbox" with many spots that we will reference throughout the year. I know this will be a great thing for all of us to have handy.

We are also preparing to lead Mass next Wednesday, August 30. Please join us at 8:30am in the Church!

Welcome to 8th-grade religion! Below you will find the overview for Trimester 1.

This handout is also available on Google Classroom, and was handed out to families in paper form at Back to School Night and to students during the first week of school. Additional paper copies can be found in our classroom.
