Faculty / Staff Whip Students
In a level of play that is seldom seen in the Bill McCurley Gymnasium, the Sloan-Hendrix faculty and staff took on the class of 2020 in a basketball battle which will be spoken of in awe down through the ages or least through first period on Monday. On Thursday evening, September 19, following the Parent/Teacher Conferences at Sloan-Hendrix, Coach Foreman’s Teacher Titans performed beyond anyone’s wildest expectations as they brought down the much, much, much more youthful opponents. It was the aged vs the young, the experienced vs. the unseasoned, the disciplined vs. the disorderly; but in the end it came down to who wanted it the most. Sometimes in sports, as in life, the outcome isn’t based on talent, strength, and fleetness, but rather on desire and dumb luck with which the eventual champs of the court had an abundance. Coach Forman’s game plan consisted of three and D relying on their defensive play and their three point accuracy. Foreman obviously brought preparation and passion to the game. Coach Foreman attributed their astonishing victory to two factors. According to the coach, “We were down by three at half time and the teams spirit was ebbing low, but Jessie Ferguson came out and hit two three’s right off which started our comeback. It all began to come together after that. Plus Coach Cagle was very savvy with his shooting this year, restraining himself from launching the ball whenever the mood struck him like last year.” On the opposite bench, faculty volunteers Mrs. Morgan and Mr. Lee, coached with a much more passive approach. Student coaches, Hayden Calhoun and Lily Foley fought back with all the talent at their disposal. Calhoun, sporting a crushed velvet blue blazer, was an obviously intimidating factor. The depth of the bench was an asset to the inevitable winners. Whenever one of the staff spent more than a few minutes with their hands on their knees, wheezing, with their tongues lolling, the ever vigilant coach was able to put a fresh body into the mix. Although, the senior class is hard put to explain the ultimate outcome, there have been some insights. For instance, it has been suggested that the smell of freshly applied Bengay overwhelmed the seniors in the second half and accounted for their less than stellar performance. Matching uniforms may also have given a psychological edge to faculty team. In the end, no matter the myriad of stories that made up the evening’s tumultuous tournament, the only story that counted was that which was told by the score board: Faculty/Staff 55 – Seniors 40. With bragging rights secured for the year, Foreman’s Fierce Faculty congratulated the seniors on their valiant efforts. However, their winning streak may be a short one, for many juniors were overheard to remark, “Just wait until next year.” The Faculty/Staff vs Senior Ball Game is a fundraiser for the Sloan-Hendrix baseball teams and was organized by Coach Burton Winston. This is the second year of the rivalry, with a win for each team. Referees for the evening were Mrs. Melanie Spence and Mr. Tom Rice. One Book, One School - Door Contest
As part of the One Book, One School initiative, teachers were asked to decorate their doors, taking inspiration from the book Restart. The three Grand Prize winners were Terry James, Tyler Chaffin, and Lisa Holland. According to high school librarian Melissa Dean, “This contest really showed how much spirit and community that this program has brought to the school. The kids have been so excited about the book and the doors. The judges were very impressed with all the effort and creativity.” In addition to the door decorating contest, students have had a chance to answer a daily question from the book during 2nd period for chance at prizes.

Senior Stuff
The class of 2020 met with the Josten's representative on September 10 to receive senior merchandise they had previously ordered. The Juniors met with the representative earlier regarding class rings.
Hunter's Ed Course at Sloan-Hendrix
During the week of September 9, 33 Sloan-Hendrix students attended a Hunter's Education course taught by Coach Greg Foreman. According to Arkansas law, all hunters born on or after January 1, 1969, must complete hunter education certification in order to hunt in Arkansas. Furthermore, according to Coach Foreman, students must complete the certification to compete on the Sloan-Hendrix Archery and Trap teams. Coach Foreman was assisted by Mr. Pardo Roberts.
One Book, One School
One Book, One School is a program designed to create a shared reading experience across an entire school community. At Sloan-Hendrix in grades 7th through 12th, every student and faculty member has been supplied with a copy of Restart by Gordon Korman. The students received their copies at an assembly on Friday, September 6. When an entire school reads the same book, a buzz and excitement around the book develops sparking an entire district-wide conversation which will inspire a rich appreciation of literature and lifelong readers and help establish a culture of literacy. Daily activates have been planned by the faculty to enrich the experience.
