Sloan-Hendrix Fall Festival
The Annual Fall Festival took place in the Old Gym on the Sloan-Hendrix campus on Friday, October 11. Booths included PTE - Concession Stand, PTE - Cake Walk, Pre-K - Cotton Candy, Kindergarten - Snow Cones, 1st Grade - Bag Decorating, 2nd Grade - Duck Pond, 3rd Grade - 2-Liter Soda Ring Toss, 4th Grade - Pumpkin Decorating, Art Club - Face Painting, High School Spec. Ed. - Pumpkin Bowling and Touch and Feel Box, Drama Club and Cheer - Harry Potter Booth, Band - Spin the Big Wheel, Choir - Balloon Dart Pop, Color Guard - Lollipop Tree, Student Council - Candy Corn Golf, Cheer Team - Yard Yahtzee, and FFA - Chili Cook-Off. Black and Gold Pep Rally
The excitement for the traditional Black and Gold Games began a week early this year due to the hard work of four individuals. Samantha Clay, Macy McCormic, Rebecca Simington, and Erin Smith are this year’s delegates to the Ralph Joseph Youth Leadership Program. R.J.Y.L.P. is a program designed to teach leadership skills and foster leadership characteristics in the youth of Lawrence County, Arkansas. Students from each of the schools in the county are selected based on an application and essay and they complete the program in the fall semester of their junior year. A community project is developed and completed by each school's participants for their school and/or community. The Sloan-Hendrix delegates decided to make increasing school spirit a part of their community project. The week before the annual Black and Gold games was designated Spirit Week with daily dress-up days. The week culminated with a well-planned Pep Rally on Friday afternoon. The Pep Rally featured introduction of all the basketball teams and performances by the high school band and color guard. High school and junior high cheerleaders helped intensify the spirit. Elementary students added their voices and dancing abilities to the melee. The rally ended with a shootout between boys and girls teams and the singing of the school song. The Black and Gold games took place on Monday, October 14. Admission to the event was free and food was provided by Citizen’s Bank. As usual, all Greyhound teams were victorious. FBLA at Fall Conference
The Sloan-Hendrix chapter of FBLA attended the District II Fall Conference held at Arkansas State University. More than 1,900 members from across District II attended the conference. After the presentation of colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem, members listened to Walt Coleman present the keynote address. Mr. Coleman, who is from the Coleman Dairy family, served as an NFL referee for the past 30 years. Mr. Coleman reminded the audience that during his tenure as a referee he was booed many times. His challenge: turn boos into cheers; the negative into the positive. FBLA at Fall Conference

Beta Club Inducts New Members

On October 8, the Sloan-Hendrix Beta Club chapter hosted their annual Induction ceremony for the 23 new members in the Bill McCurley Gymnasium. President Hannah Rohrer started off the meeting with stating the goals of the chapter and then continued into the candle-lighting ceremony. Vice President Dominick Folk then spoke about the group as a community and their united passions for the upcoming year. Following, Emily Woodard spoke about her role as Secretary, and the loyalty and constancy for which the club should strive. Kylee Crotts, holding the office of Treasurer, communicated the importance of honesty and dignity that is expected within the group. After all the officers spoke of their duties and goals, Lilly Foley spoke on behalf of all the members and their cooperation with the officers and sponsors. Lakyn Phares then accepted the role of membership for all new members, and promised to contribute their part to the success of Beta Club. To conclude the meeting, Hannah Rohrer recited the Senior Beta Pledge with all members repeating it after her. Decade Lip-Sync Battle
On Friday Night, October 4, the Music Department of Sloan-Hendrix High School presented the Decade Show, a lip-sync contest for high school students featuring songs from the 1950s through the 1990s. The Decade Show serves as a fund raiser for the Music Department. Twenty acts filled the night’s bill with popular songs across fifty years of music. At the end of the show, the audience voted for the finest performance. The winners were Chandler Malone, Evan Ross, Markas Johnson, and Nathan Lepard performing “YMCA”. Other acts that were in the running for the top spot included “Thriller”, “Ice Ice Baby”, and “Time of My Life”. Samantha Clay served as Mistress of Ceremonies. Sloan-Hendrix Career Day
On Friday, October 4, 2019, Sloan-Hendrix students participated in the third annual Career Fair. Approximately 30 vendors set up booths with information concerning careers and training. Sloan-Hendrix Career Day
The morning began with an assembly for juniors and seniors. Ms. McCormic welcomed students and introduced Mrs. Tyler, the new career coach at sloan-Hendrix. Mrs. Tyler let students know of the services she can provide for them when looking for colleges and preparing for careers. Yalanda Merrill, of UAMS, then spoke to students about their futures and the hard work they must be willing to do to be successful. Freshmen and sophomores attended the second half of the morning.
A new addition to this year’s fair were senior interviews. Two weeks prior to the fair, seniors were given instructions during their English class on preparing a resume. Hints were given about how to present yourself during an interview and the types of questions that might be asked. Each senior prepared a resume and filled out an application for employment. Six interview stations were set up in the gymnasium with two interviewers at each station. Seniors were assigned a particular room where they had a mock interview. Employees of BRTC and members of the business and law enforcement community served as interviewers for the event.
The Peco booth had a drawing for gift cards. Bryson Vance won a $10 Chick-fil-A card and Amy Tidwell won a Subway card worth $15.

FBLA members picked up trash in their "Spot" on Tuesday, October 1. Organizations at Sloan-Hendrix have a designated spot to keep litter free and help keep the Sloan-Hendrix campus beautiful.
