In our district, only approved extensions and apps are available for users to install from the Chrome Web Store.
You can view a list of already approved extensions and apps below this box.
You can request a new extension or app be approved by submitting a Help Desk ticket.
Two extensions are already installed for all faculty and student users.
Read&Write for Google Chrome, free version, used to have websites or Google Docs read aloud
Share to Classroom, which allows teachers to push websites to all student devices, teachers to post directly to Classroom from the site they're on, and for students to access Classroom quickly
One app is available on all student Chromebooks.
Questar, used for NYS 3-8 ELA and Math testing
Extensions are small programs you can install in Google Chrome that will give it additional functionality.
For example, if you are signed into your NN account in Chrome, you should see a purple puzzle piece at the top-right corner of your screen.
This is the Read&Write extension, which helps make it easy in Chrome to hear a webpage or Google Doc read aloud.
With a few exceptions, most educational Chrome apps tend to just be links to the websites they represent.
For example, if you install the NewsELA app, it will not add any extra functionality for students, it will just put a link to NewsELA in the students' app launchers on their Chromebooks.
Generally it is a better practice to create a bookmark for a site rather than install an app for it.
To help faculty collaborate to share and teach each other about the websites we use, we've been working on a shared Google Sheet of sites, shown below.
