Year 5/6

The senior years at St Liborius are very focused on leadership, independence and community involvement. The Year 5 students have an integral role in the school community as they welcome and support the new Prep students and guide them in their school journey for two years, providing comfort, support and assisting them to become confident and increasingly independent at school. The Year 5 students also train as Peer Mediators which they then practise in the last year at St Liborius, a significant introduction to leadership opportunities in the year to come.

The Year 6 students have the exciting opportunity to apply for leadership roles within the school and then follow through with these positions throughout the year. Leadership is embedded throughout the senior experience and is always forefront in our expectations for all senior students at St Liborius.

The Walker Learning Approach is entrenched in our pedagogy and we continue to build on these skills taught in previous grades. The interests and passions the students possess are an extremely important catalyst for their learning, enabling students to fully engage with their Education Research Projects as well as build their independence, self-regulation and research skills.

There are many fun and exciting events and programs for the senior students to take part in. These include specialised sporting events, camps, official ceremonies and many other immersion opportunities to build on leadership, strengths and eye-opening new experiences. We encourage resilience, taking on new challenges and kindness. As the students come to the end of their primary school education, the Graduate Outcomes we strive for our students to achieve have been well established and will continue to strengthen and shape our students into independent lifelong learners.

Year 5/6 Leadership Groups

Leadership is an integral aspect of the development and education of all of our students at St Liborius Primary School particularly our Year 5 and 6 students. Leadership can take place in many forms and styles and these qualities are continually built upon and enhanced throughout primary school life. St Liborius views leadership skills as essential for children as they progress through their education in order for students to take control of their learning and the ability to achieve anything they set their mind to. We know leadership instils confidence, persistence, resilience and adaptive thinking. It supports students to solve problems creatively, work as part of a team, lead teams and work collaboratively with others. Leadership gives children many opportunities to develop responsibility for themselves and for others. We know that in an ever changing society, we need our students to be able to be adaptive thinkers by taking risks, being courageous and remaining open to new challenges to grow and flourish to their full potential.

All of our Year 5 and 6 students are given the opportunity to lead. This takes place in many ways such as presenting at our fortnightly assemblies, being part of the Student Representative Council and reporting to students in other classes throughout the term, leading tours of the school, becoming buddies to our new Prep as well as Year 1 students, representing the school at various excursions and ceremonies and much more.

Please take a look at our 2022 Leadership Groups below. All Year 6 students receive a leadership role after application and reflecting on personal skills, qualities and passions.

School Captains

Our School Captains role includes leading by example, mentoring and inspiring their peers and other students. The School Captains frequently lead the school community, represent St Liborius at various events, greet visitors, lead tours and enhance the ability of other leaders in addition to organising and supporting school events.

Sustainability and Safety Leaders

Our Sustainability and Safety Leaders role includes creating a school environment that is safe and promoting sustainable education for other students. This includes monitoring the environment, communicating actions that need to take place and leading by example. These leaders are involved in developing the school garden and strategies to minimise waste, educating others about good environmental practices and promotion of initiatives such as minimising energy consumption.

Sports Captains

Our Sports Captains role includes planning for and representing their team at whole school sporting events. A significant element of this is enhancing their team's performance by encouraging students to have a go, developing confidence in others and supporting students to operate as part of a team. Sports Captains always lead by example by promoting participation through demonstrating good sportsmanship while being a role model at all times both during and after competition.

Social Justice Leaders

Our Social Justice Leaders role includes working closely with staff to lead the school in exploring their faith and ways they can serve others. The leaders in this role show commitment to engaging in social justice activities locally and on a global level. They lead by example by encouraging all students to think about what we can do for others who may be less fortunate than us and inspire this way of thinking about the world, throughout the whole school.

FIRE Carriers

Our FIRE Carriers are a combination of Year 5 and 6 leaders. FIRE is an acronym for Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education. The FIRE Carrier project is an initiative of the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry which seeks to keep the Reconciliation flame alight in schools educating the wider community about Reconciliation, our shared history and culture. The role includes planning for and running Reconciliation activities for the school, raising funds for the Opening The Doors foundation and ensuring as a school we acknowledge and celebrate significant dates in our shared story.
