Vice President

Drama Club

This article refers to the dissolved vice presidency of Drama Club. For the vice presidency of SLOHS Performing Arts see Vice President.

The Vice President of the Drama Club is a discontinued office within was the San Luis Obispo High School Drama Club. While the position was occupied, the Vice President was the third-highest officer after the president and the faculty adviser, and was the presumptive successor to the president should they leave office mid-term. The vice president assisted in leading the club, as well as the affiliated Drama Company, and was traditionally one of the most involved actors of the group.

The vice presidency was first created in 1961, alongside the Theater Arts Club, the first extracurricular incarnation of the drama program. Actress Karon Richardson held the inaugural office from 1961 to 1962. Actor and later president Baxter Boyington was the first male vice president, serving for the fall semester of 1965. Boyington and vice president Denise Middleton (spring 1964) are the only known vice presidents to also become president. Vice President Karen Butler (1971–72) was the first sophomore to hold the office.

After an extended vacancy, the office was reestablished on May 25, 2018 with the appointment of Vice President Ella Livingston. During Livingston's time in office, the authority of the role very nearly equaled President Cati Newlon's; while Livingston operated under the title of "vice," the Newlon-Livingston administration mimicked a co-presidency, simply with Newlon having an additional veto power. Livingston's concurrent presidency in the Film Production Club also ensured that Newlon had slightly greater club involvement. They also assisted the faculty adviser in the selection of productions and were historically the most likely club members to student direct a play.

The incumbent president of the club appointed their successor at the conclusion of their term or upon their own graduation. While there was no application or election process, candidates were chosen based on several holistic factors including involvement in the club and age seniority.

There were three key presumed qualifications for holding the presidency: attendance at San Luis Obispo High School; at least a ninth grader at the time of their appointment; and prior membership in the club for at least one year. Because appointments were made in the spring for the following school year, incoming freshmen are ineligible for office; thus, no vice president may have served more than three one-year terms, except in the case that a vice president was subject to grade retention.

Frequently, but not universally, Drama Club leaders also concurrently served as leaders of Iambic Pentameter, the club's Shakespeare branch. Vice President Livingston served as Assistant Director of the club for 2018–2019.

The office was officially dissolved upon the 2021 reorganization of Drama Club, after being vacant since 2019.
