In February 2021 our Computer Science Leadership team created and sent out a computer science survey to our elementary certified staff. The questions asked were aligned to our goals of providing equitable computer science instruction to all students, increasing staff understanding and support of computer science instruction, and providing staff with on-going professional development around computer science. This survey was sent out again in May of 2022.

  1. Do you think computer science is something that should be taught in your classroom? (Not at all to As much as possible)

Average response of 3.8 out of 5 (2021), 3.8 out of 5 (2022)

  1. How often do you teach computer science in your classroom? (Not at all to Daily)

Average response of 1.92 out of 5 (2021), 2 out of 5 (2022)

  1. How comfortable are you teaching computer science in your classroom? (Not comfortable at all to Very Comfortable)

Average response of 2.6 out of 5 (2021), 2.6 out of 5 (2022)

  1. How much training have you had on teaching computer science? (None to A lot)

Average response of 1.84 (2021), 2 of out 5 (2022)

The survey concluded with two short answer questions and the opportunity for any additional comments and questions.

The short answer questions were as follows:

What is computer science?

What would you like to learn about computer science?

What is computer science?

Computer science is the practice, knowledge, and skills used to design and use computers, computer programs, and other technologies. It should be heavy in problem solving and understanding how step-by-step processes are used to create tools to better help the human race.

Learning how to use systems or programs and how to incorporate them into everyday situations.

Teaching students skills that lead to jobs ranging from coding to problem solving on the computer to creating things and using other programs.

The study of computers and the way that they work/process information.

It is a science that involves coding and using computer programs to share knowledge, fix problems, and improve understanding of concepts.

What would you like to learn about computer science?

More ways to incorporate it into what we are already teaching and doing in the classroom so that it has more of a flow.

Everything in relation to elementary students and how to use within the curriculum we already have to teach.

I'd love more time to brainstorm how to implement the different tools and what it can look like across content areas/specials.

Different components that are easily implemented without a lot of pre prep work and that students can easily figure out and understand.

How can I teach CS in my classroom by incorporating it into my daily curriculum rather than making it a stand alone class?

I would like to use the Ozobots in my classroom and create a project to got with storytelling.
