Serve a Healthier Breakfast @ 7

Breakfast @ SLHS

We interviewed people about the issue and most agreed that breakfast should be healthier and served earlier.

Sugary Breakfast Served Too Late

The breakfast at SLHS consists of Poptarts, donuts, cereals, & etc. Students and teachers believe that starting out with a large amount of sugar early in the morning is not a good idea. Many believe that these sugary options should be terminated, or have a healthier alternative, but a sweet breakfast isn't the only problem. A selective amount of students cannot get breakfast, finish it, and still be on time to attend first period. Zero period students start class at 7:10 AM while breakfast is served at 7:30 AM. You may think, "Why can't they just get breakfast after class?" Well, zero period ends at 8:00 AM and first period starts at 8:10 AM, leaving only ten minutes in between, which is not enough time if you are crossing campuses.

The Solution

There are many ways to solve this issue. For one, breakfast could start at 7:00 AM instead of 7:30 AM. If the breakfast time cannot be changed, then the policy should. Instead of banning food from classrooms, teachers should allow students to consume their breakfast peacefully in class, that way they would not be tardy, miss part of the lesson, and still finish their meal. Teachers who ban food from their classroom are worried about the mess of crumbs and wrappers, but if students clean up after themselves then that would not be a problem. And most importantly, the breakfast itself. There are students at SLHS who are vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or allergic to some common foods. To fix this, the school can serve various items that differ from day to day as lunch does.
