TWO Trinity High School students are making waves in the world of writing. Liza Solas and Cian Kearney came 2nd and Runner up in the Young Scot's Writer of the Year Award, a national poetry competition.
Liza Solas and Cian Kearney were honoured on the evening with Liza picking up second prize in the Young Scots Writer o’ the Year award for her poem, 'The Way Ah Speak,' while judges gave finalist Cian’s work a highly commended badge of recognition. Liza said: "It is amazing to be recognised in a national competition for our poetry. I think our club is pretty unusual but it's honestly such a great place to come and share our poems."
Cian also added: "Poetry club has become such a vital part of our school week so it's brilliant that our work has been shortlisted. Poetry club is a place for us to express ourselves, learn writing craft and to see that poetry doesn't just start and end with what gets taught at Scottish Set Text."
Trinity High School English teacher Mr Shearer was contacted by one of the competition's organisers to advise this was the first instance of two young writers from the same poetry club and school being shortlisted.
Saying that the "massive win" for the school and its poetry club illustrates the craft and care young poets display in their writing, he commented: "I am so pleased with their progress on their writing journeys, for the magic they create every week at Poetry Club and it's tremendous that they are being recognised nationally in this competition.

Over the coming weeks Trinity has become a part of a new pilot set up by South Lanarkshire council. This scheme is being called the Waste Pilot has released at both Trinity and Larkhall Academy. This scheme has been set up to encourage recycling in South Lanarkshire schools and workplaces in an attempt to motivate people to do their part in the fight against the Climate Crisis. This pilot will see the school receiving a number of recycling bins, properly labelled and coloured, free of charge from the council and there will be a competition held between Trinity and Larkhall to see who can recycle more over the time limit. This is a great opportunity for Trinity to prove just how involved we are in helping the environment. Get recycling! Lets win this trinity!

Trinity pupil and Trinity Times journalist Amber Cooper shone bright in Encore Stars Academy's production of Frozen Jrs. Completing several performances at East Kilbride's Village Theatre, Amber starred amongst her friends from the junior Encore Stars Academy, a musical theatre group for 8-16 year olds.
Amber was almost unrecognisable on stage, switching her Trinity uniform for an ice harvester costume, as she performed in a leading role as Kristoff. Frequently performing alongside her costar, who donned antlers as Sven, Kristoff's reindeer companion, Amber rose to the occasion, producing many laughs and cheers from the packed audience.
Amber proved a triple threat in her role, singing several solos, including the witty 'Reindeers are Better than People', dancing the lively 'Hygge' song and acting as a daft, reindeer loving ice harvester from Arendale! She was supported by friends, family and Trinity staff who attended the entertaining performance.
This is not Amber's first chance taking a leading role, as she previously starred as Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid Jrs last year with Encore Stars Academy. If you're keen to see Amber perform closer to home, she will also be starring in Trinity's Pantomime - The Best Present Ever this Christmas! If that's not enough - Amber is already preparing her audition for Encore Stars' next musical! A true Trinity talent!

This article is about the Net Ministry Team and what they do. You may have seen them going around the school or in your RE class, but if you haven't, you should have a chat with them because they’re really nice and friendly!
Name: Ellias
Age: 19 years old
From: Arizona
What do you do in the Net Ministry
‘So basically, as Net Missionaries what we do is we travel around and we are putting on retreats, so we go to different schools and we will put on retreats for about a day, and during that time we will do talks and share testimonies how God worked in our lives. We'll do games, activities and we usually end with some prayer. Right now, we are in this school for about 4 weeks, so it is a little bit different. But our main message is to share that God has created all of us and has created us to be able to love, to be able to be loved by him and we are kind of trying to spread that message because well like yeah, we want people to be joyful.’
How did you hear about the Net Ministry?
‘I think I was 17 and I was finishing high school and they came to my church, they did a retreat, and it turned out that the team there was gonna be staying with my family. I just saw them and I was like "Who are these guys like what the heck?! These guys are weird?" So yeah ... I just met them through one of their retreats and I was hooked!’
What do you do in your spare time?
‘Well, we do not have a lot of spare time, but I love listening to music. I love playing music because I play a couple different instruments like the guitar, I like to mess about. I like to read, I like to be outside, and I love playing sports.’
What is your favourite food and drink?
‘One of my favourite foods ever is triton and it is like this steak, but it is marinated in like this wine kind of thing and it is like all the alcohol is burned off, but the flavour goes into the meat, the thing about this is only my godmother can make this good. I love root beer floats, firstly root beer is like the American Irn Bru, and you take ice cream vanilla usually, and you put it in then it like fizzes up and it becomes a root beer float.’
What is different in America to Scotland?
‘You guys drive on the different side of the road, which is whack. You guys have way more breaks for tea and things like that, and yeah in the school today I was kinda following around some of the S5’s and they were allowed to knock on the doors and interrupt class so that people can buy coffee, that would never happen in America, like you're not allowed to interrupt class to sell coffee.’
Anything else you would like to add?
‘Andrew Garfield is the best Spiderman, Spiderman is the best superhero. I am actually lactose intolerant, and I might get backlash for this, but I think Irn Bru is overrated. I also love how you guys say och aye and my favourite word is Howdy.’
Name: Catherine
Age: 22
From: Michigan
What do you do in the Net Ministry?
‘We travel around Scotland and a little bit of England, and we go into schools and do retreats. We also go into RE class and do activities: sharing our stories and experiences with God. The main focus is connecting with you guys and getting to know you. Making good connections and helping you find the same joy we have.’
How did you hear about it?
‘I saw a poster for Net Ministry in Ireland at my university. It looked fun, so I started looking into it further and I ended up missing the deadline for that. Then they told me about Net Scotland, and I kept thinking about it, so I applied and here I am!’
Favourite thing to do in your spare time?
‘I really love playing music and writing music, I mostly play piano and guitar. I used to play violin and trumpet in secondary school but piano is my favourite. I love writing, but that is not practical to do, since I do not have much of my stuff with me. I also really like exploring nature and going on walks which is really great to do here because there are lots of green areas in Scotland.’
What is your favourite food or drink?
‘I love ice cream!’
What things are different in America to Scotland?
‘We don’t have haggis and you guys don’t have Chick-Fil-A. The landscape is a bit different too and the culture is different. Both countries have their own words and phrases that the other doesn’t and sometimes we have the same words that mean a different thing.’
Anything else you would like to say?
‘I am really excited to be in this school. I have enjoyed it so far - it is the first time we have been in a school for a whole month and getting to know you guys has been nice! I just think people in this school are great.’
Name: Rose
Age: 18
From: Preston (North of England)
What do you do in the Net Ministry?
‘We go round different schools and basically spend days with different year groups or classes, for example in Trinity we are going round all the RE classes.’
How did you get to know about this organisation?
‘I had a friend who worked with Net who was telling me about it, then when I was looking for something to do as I finished high school just there, I thought it sounded really fun.’
What is your favourite thing to do in your spare time?
‘I love playing music, I play the flute, guitar, drums, piano, and a little bit of xylophone’
What is your favourite food/drink?
‘I really love lasagna, and I just love tea.’
What things are different in Scotland?
‘I’d say the weather, especially because I live in the countryside, it’s very different.
Anything else you would like to add?
‘I also have lots of pets which are 3 rabbits, 3 guinea pigs, a dog and 6 cats.’

Meet Ella Whitehead - School Captain
This interview was conducted with Ella Whitehead, who is the performing ethos and Events Captain.
What is your favourite part of being the performing arts captain?
“It’s fun getting to step into a leadership role and be working working closely with a department I have always felt truly at home in”
What made you want to be the performing arts captain?
“I took inspiration from Caitlin MacIntire and Erin Glen, who were last years captains, along with all the other previous captains that have shown me how much fun being the performing arts captain is.”
What do you prefer, music or drama?
“Both - I can’t pick between them.”
Do you have any advice for anybody wanting to go for performing arts captain in the future?
“Just be yourself. Be confident and don’t let anyone put you down by saying that you don’t deserve it. If you think you deserve it then go for it and put yourself forward.”
Do You Have Any Funny Stories From Backstage?
“Dancing in the wings when a really big musical number is happening and also doing weird and funny accents with your lines backstage before going on”
What is your dream role in a show?
“Any lead role in a musical - it displays my acting and singing skills”
If you could go out for a dinner party with anybody from the past or present, who would you invite and why?
“I would invite Naomi Keys because she helped me to break out of my shell and she helped me through a lot of hard times. I would also like to go out for one with the casts of the school shows I have been involved with because they are awesome.”
We also discussed the topic of where do you see yourself in ten years and she shared her opinions by saying “I see myself as being a successful music teacher”. Furthermore, we also discussed Ella's favourite memory from being a member of the performing arts department and she told me: “I’ve loved being a part of the amazing casts for the school shows over the years”.
