Pope Leo XIV was born Robert Francis Prevost on the 14th of September 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, United States (this therefore makes him the first American Pope). He was born to a devout Catholic family of French and Italian descent, he was one of 3 children, the other two (John and Louis Martín Prevost) being older than him. Pope Leo attended St.Augustine Seminary High School, Michigan and in 1977, he graduated from the University of Villanova in Pennsylvania, with a degree in Mathematics. He then went on to join the Order of Saint Augustine in Saint Louis and then he studied theology at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He was then sent to study Canon Law at the University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, where on the 2nd of September 1982, he was ordained a priest. Pope Leo was then sent, as a missionary and then Bishop, to Peru over an estimated 38 year period; visiting various towns and cities in Peru to teach Canon law and support struggling communities. On September 26th 2015, he was appointed as Bishop of the city of Chiclayo. He then went on to become an archbishop in January 2023; Pope Francis then made him a cardinal on September 30th 2023. As cardinal he became the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, which involved both the selection and overseeing of Bishops around the world.
