In this article, sports enthusiast Arinade recaps the major controversies of the olympics.
The Olympics takes place every four years and is supposed to be an exemplary showcase of the best athletes in the world. However, the Paris Olympics 2024 has faced a lot of criticism for its controversies which are detailed below.
French River
The river Seine data showed that elevated levels of E coli bacteria were detected in the river at least once during every day of the first week of the Olympics, between July 26 and Sunday 28.
Olympic Village
Ceccon, who won gold in the men's 100m backstroke and bronze in the men's 4x100m freestyle, was outspoken about the living conditions after failing to qualify for the men's 200m backstroke final. "There is no air conditioning in the village, it's hot, the food is bad," Ceccon complained. Competitors have been sleeping on single beds made from cardboard - and while some found them comfortable, others shipped in their own mattress toppers. But they are said to be pretty sturdy, with gold medal-winning British diver Tom Daley testing out the design by jumping up and down on the bed with no sign of damage. Some competitors even went to sleep outside because of how hot it was.
Tasteless food
However, Great Britain's bronze medal-winning diver Yasmin Harper actually praised the sleeping conditions and told The Athletic: "I actually really like the bed. I enjoy a hard bed, so it is great for me. And the village is really nice." But she was not as happy with the food in the 3,500-seater main dining hall, which caters for around 40,000 meals a day. Team GB chief executive, Andy Anson, has also said it is inadequate. He told The Times: "At the beginning of every Games, there are usually two or three issues - the big one this time is the food in the village, which is not adequate. There are not enough of certain foods: eggs, chicken, certain carbohydrates, and then there is the quality of the food, with raw meat being served to athletes."
