WHY YOU SHOULDN'T PASS UP A CHANCE TO PLAY RUGBY!
I STARTED PLAYING RUGBY sometime at the end of May start of April and I knew nothing at all, I knew my uncle Stuart would be my coach that was about it. Before I joined Hamilton Rugby Club I had a rough idea as to how rugby worked and my uncle Stuart and my uncle Ross have taken me to Murrayfield many times with my cousin Scott, so I wasn’t intimidated like some people might have been but that’s why I’m writing this article, to encourage you all to give rugby a go!
You might be asking yourself, "Well what exactly is ‘rugby”? Rugby union football, commonly known simply as rugby union or more often just rugby, is a close-contact team sport, (but there is a variation called touch rugby which isn’t a contact sport) that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. Rugby is simply based on running with the ball in hand. In its most common form, a game is played between two teams of 15 players each, using an oval-shaped ball on a rectangular field called a pitch. The field has H-shaped goalposts at both ends.
I've been to Murrayfield to watch the women play with my rugby team and even got photos with the ladies after they played but with the little experience I had here's everything I have learned from when I started until now.
From the end of May to the start of April until the end of July I slowly started understanding the basics of rugby (tackling, passing structure and positions). When getting taught how to tackle you ideally have to get below the sternum or just below where the ball is on the ball carrier. Anything higher is classified as a high tackle which leads to a penalty so passing on the other hand is a lot more simple.
So you would have the ball in your hands with whatever hand it is your passing with (e.g. I'll use my right hand) on top of the ball and the other hand just at the bottom of the ball and what you do is you rotate your bottom hand from the sky to the floor. When catching or receiving the ball you would make a big W with your hands to catch it. If someone has kicked the ball you would want to run and get under it and catch up in your arms and run before you get tackled. Another thing with passing is getting/moving the ball into space so what that means is quickly moving the ball down the line far enough so it cause a break in the defends line causing someone to run through and score
With rugby there is a position for everyone there might be a single position you like to play if so that's great but it's okay to play about with positions I normally play back or in other on the right wing but now I'm slowly moving into forwards playing centre or I would play scrum half which is still in the back.
Girls rugby is inclusive, fun and also teaches social skills, normally after we play games we would sit in the clubhouse and eat together. To be honest we laugh and take pictures more than we eat.Rugby for me has given me loads of opportunities to see professional games such as Scotland's men and woman. Going to games encourages me to keep training and strive to become better.
I love the sport I do. Rugby has made me closer with family friends and my coaches and made me happier as a person so pick up some courage and go play rugby!

On the 27th of November at Trinity High, the Pe department hosted Sportathon. For the last 5 years Sportathon has been held at Trinity and it has been successful each time. The leadup to this event involves lots of donations that made the fun night even better. Pupils have a range of different activities to keep them busy all night and some popular activities were Gaelic Football, dodgeball and cheerleading. Children would be given 1 hour to complete an activity that you could choose from, and that would be continuous for 6 hours (school for sports)
Here are some activities we did and what they were about:
Boxing- The activity we did was boxing, I enjoy boxing and one thing we enjoyed was the jumping ropes. We also learned how stand properly when punching the punching bag.
Inflatables- Was an activity there all night; you got to play table tennis a there was also a bungy run.
Curling- curling is a winter sport that is extremely popular in Scotland and Canada. Players on 2 sides slide there large disk towards a circular goal.
Boccia – Boccia is played on a court in teams of up to three people. Each team is given six balls, and the objective of the game is for players to roll their balls as close as possible to a white target ball called a jack.
In conclusion Sportathon is an event that is successful every single year and I 100% believe it will be successful again this year. It’s a fun night to have fun with classmates and even talk to people you don’t talk to usually. Having pizza, using inflatables and doing amazing activities is definitely a way to finish the week and have a great start to the weekend!

In Trinity High School, we are very lucky to have our School Of Netball programme open to a small group of S1’s every year. Along with our netball after-school club open to the whole school S1-S6. In this article, we will be talking about all things netball, and also getting some thoughts from our netball students.
Positions.
There are 7 different positions in a team on-court during a netball game, which are: Goal Shooter (GS), Goal Attack (GA), Goal Defence (GD), Goal Keeper (GK), Wing Defence (WD), Wing Attack (WA) and Centre (C)
Each position has a different player to mark - GK would mark GS on the opposite team, GD marks GA, WD marks WA, and C basically marks everyone!
Each player also has a certain place they are allowed on the court:
GS - 1st third of court and semicircle.
GK - 1st third of court and semicircle.
GA - 2 thirds of court and semicircle.
GD - 2 thirds of court and semicircle.
WA - All of court except the semicircle.
WD - All of court except the semicircle.
C - All of court except the semicircle.
Students Comments.
Ava - “I play GA or GS, and I think netball is just an all round fun sport to do with your friends.”
Mya - “I play GS because I always have a task to know what I’m doing, which is always trying to score a goal when I’m playing.”
Caera - “I love GA because you can help your team win the game completely from just one goal sometimes, and I just feel like I play a huge part in the team playing this position.”
Louisa - “I play WA because I think it’s really fun. I enjoy netball because you get to meet new people and learn lots of new skills.”
Rules Of Netball.
The basic rules of a netball game you would need to know when starting would be:
Try to stay where you are allowed on court (depending on whatever- position you are playing in), or the other team will get a free pass.
Defend your opposite position (the position you are meant to be- defending, ask you teammates or coach to be sure).
The other more detailed rules, you will learn as you get into netball.
Conclusion.
I really hope you enjoyed reading this netball themed article. Remember if you are interested in getting involved with the sport netball, there are lots of different clubs outside of school, and also the netball opportunities in school too).

Celtic travelled to the Netherlands to face the Dutch champions Feyenoord in Rotterdam for their first 2023/24 Champions league game.
The Feyenoord fans were loud and wanted Celtic to know that they were up for this game, but the Celtic supporters responded straight away and were also loud. Soon after there were roars and chants from both Celtic and Feyenoord fans inside the De Kuip stadium.
The first half of the game was very close. Celtic were well organised and defended well. They tried to attack Feyenoord and had some good chances, but the passing was very sloppy. Just before the half-time whistle was blown Calvin Stengs scored a free kick for Feyenoord that the Celtic wall and goalkeeper Joe Hart probably should have done a bit better with. This gave the Dutch side a real boost.
In the second half Celtic were under a lot of pressure and then Gustaf Lagerbielke gave away a soft penalty and was sent off for a second yellow. Joe Hart made a great save to keep the score at 1-0. However Celtic made it hard for themselves when Odin Thiago Holm was given a straight red card for a bad tackle and Celtic were now down to 9 men.
Feyenoord were attacking very well and finally scored a second goal through Alireza Johanbakhsh to make the score 2-0, although the 9 men of Celtic did well to stop them from scoring again.
It was another tough night for Celtic in the Champions League and Brendon Rodgers’ team will need to improve a lot when they play Lazio next.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric as Celtic prepared for their first home Champions League match of the season, and they were playing the Italian giants Lazio. All around Celtic Park was filled with colour and noise as the supporters sang their famous anthem 'You’ll Never Walk Alone’. The noise was deafening as both teams entered the pitch to start the game. You could barely hear the Champions League anthem because the fans were so loud. Celtic Park has one of the best atmospheres in football on big European nights like this, as noticed by famous players such as Toni Kroos, Xavi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Celtic started the game with pace and attacking football and were creating good chances. After only 12 minutes they scored a fantastic goal, Kyogo the Japanese superstar with a great finish after some lovely passing to set him up. The noise in the stadium was incredible as the players celebrated!
However, Lazio started to keep possession and Celtic were stuck in their own half. Celtic’s passing wasn't as good anymore and they seemed a wee bit shaky. In the 29th minute Vecino scored for Lazio from a corner kick after bad defending from Celtic. So at the end of the first half it was 1-1.
In the second half Celtic looked strong as they were pressing Lazio very well and passing the ball very well. Captain Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley were controlling the midfield immaculately. Then it looked certain Celtic had won the game after the Honduran winger Luis Palma scored a lovely goal in the 84th minute, the stadium erupted with roars and cheers, but the fans were soon in shock after VAR ruled the goal offside because Maeda accidentally was offside. The fans were booing the referee loudly because they thought it wasn't offside.
However, the crowd were soon silenced when Lazio scored a winning goal in the 95th minute. There was a defensive mix up and Pedro made it 2-1 for Lazio. It was very undeserved as Celtic were the better team and Lazio didn't play as well. Once again the Scottish champions failed to get a big European game day win. They have a real fight to get out of their group now as they host the mighty Atletico Madrid in their next European game.
