Parent/Caregiver Responsibilities

PARENT/GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITIES

Parent/guardian are responsible for the cost of repair or replacement if the device is:

  • Not returned

  • Intentionally damaged

  • Lost because of negligence

  • Stolen, but not reported to school and local law enforcement in a timely manner

MONITORING STUDENT USE

SKSD makes every effort to equip families with tools and information to ensure safe use of SK-issued devices in the home. Filtering services provided in our schools - in compliance with minimum federal regulations for the protection of students - are extended to Chromebooks when they are used away from school. Parent/guardian involvement is key for keeping students safe online.

SUGGESTED PRACTICES FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS:

  • Sign up for weekly reports to view your child's browsing activity.

  • Develop rules or expectations at home for device usage. Topics to consider include:

      • Balancing online and offline time

      • Appropriate sleep and exercise habits

      • Screen-free times or screen-free zones

      • Device curfews

  • Find a location in the home away from a student’s bedroom to charge the device for the night to promote healthy sleeping habits.

  • Set age-appropriate guidelines for screen time,

  • Expect the Chromebook to be used at home just like how it be used at school as a learning tool

  • Explore parental controls which may be available through your internet service provider

  • Turn off your home WiFi at appropriate times. Many of the Chromebook and other device features require an Internet connection to function. When offline, the Chromebook can access the Google Workspace for Education suite (Docs, Slides, etc.) and not much more. Turning off your home WiFi at night can prevent late-night YouTube sessions, or chatting with friends at inappropriate times.
