Just like textbooks, team uniforms, and other school property issued to students for school purposes, there is a responsibility to care for and return the property in good condition. We know accidents or loss may happen, even when students do their best to care for their devices.
Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, students in grades 6-12 (and others who take home technology devices) are eligible to participate in a district protection program to cover accidental damage or loss to student Chromebooks. Visit the ITS page to learn more about costs and coverage details.
The 2023-24-non-refundable cost will be $20/student/year
Students eligible for Reduced Price lunch will pay $5
Students eligible for Free lunch will be automatically enrolled (no action necessary)
Visit the SKSD Web Store to sign up (after August 1, 2023)
Enrollment must be purchased within three weeks of the start of school (or three weeks after the student’s enrollment date)
The insurance is non-transferable (ie. each student must purchase the insurance)
Coverage is as follows:
The first accidental damage incident in a school year is covered at 100%
The second accidental damage incident in a school year is covered at 50% (ie. student is responsible for 50% of the repair cost)
Any additional damage in a school year is the student’s responsibility for full cost of repair
Intentional damage is NOT covered – the student would be responsible for the full cost
All SKSD owned devices must be returned. Students leaving the SKSD, regardless of the time of the year, must return the device to the school. As part of the return/check-in procedures, the Chromebook will be inspected to assure that it is functioning and not damaged. If a student leaves the district but does not return the device, they will be fined for the full replacement cost, and standards rules for the restriction of records and transcripts would apply. Law enforcement may be involved for the purpose of recovering SKSD property.
Unexpected problems do occur with the devices that are not the fault of the user (Chromebook crashes, software errors, etc.). Each school has a designated contact in their building, usually the school's Technology Liaison. School staff can direct students to who that individual is in each school. Do not attempt to repair the Chromebook yourself or bring to an outside computer shop for repair.
To limit interruptions in learning, students may receive a "loaner" device while a Chromebook is serviced or repaired.
Visit the ITS page on skschools.org for information on Chromebook fines.
