Units of Learning


These digital lesson units of learning are designed for elementary students in first, third, and fifth grade.

African American Women Suffragists

This inquiry based unit lesson uses the jigsaw method of inquiry based learning. The lesson is designed for fifth grade students to learn and synthesize information about four African American women suffragists. This lesson culminates with the students comparing and contrasting the women's lives to determine similarities and differences between their life experiences. 

Local Environmental Science

This inquiry based unit lesson utilizes the jigsaw model of inquiry thinking. This lesson focuses on third grade students studying local weather related issues and determine solutions that help citizens deal with specific weather related issues. This lesson culminates with students creating a new solution or improve a current solution for dealing with the weather related problem.

Homes for Plants

This design thinking unit utilizes the LAUNCH model of design thinking. This lesson is designed for first grade learners. Students will work with mentors to explore the needs of plants and create a prototype container for a plant by using recycled materials. Through the process, students will examine their prototype and adapt and change their prototype as needed to improve their design. Students will be supported by the classroom teacher, a teacher librarian and other mentors throughout the unit.
