The M.A. program in Communication Studies at San José State University is grounded in the theoretical and ethical foundations of communication studies; the modes of inquiry employed by communication scholars; and the practical application of these concepts and methods in professional and scholarly contexts. Our curriculum is designed for new graduates, mid-career professionals, and those returning to school.


After completing our two-year program, alumni pursue careers in a range of fields: aspiring academics continue to doctoral programs, those with a passion for teaching pursue appointments at local community colleges, and many go on to careers in Silicon Valley or in the nonprofit sector.

SJSU's M.A. in Child and Adolescent Development (ChAD) is designed for students who are passionate about studying development, from early childhood through emerging adulthood. The degree prepares graduates for a wide range of career paths, including early childhood education administration, parent educators and youth advocates, community college instruction, community programming and outreach, pediatric and public health professionals, program evaluation, and more!

The M.S. Justice Studies program prepares graduates for careers in criminal justice administration, research and policy centers, public institutions, community organizations, and nonprofit agencies, as well as for doctoral programs and research positions in public agencies.

The online M.S. Criminology program Concentration in Global Criminology is designed to adapt to the ever-changing environment of the justice and legal systems, and the discipline of criminology. It aims to equip graduates with a truly global outlook on crime and criminal justice, a commitment to international justice, and professional competencies to apply practices from around the globe to meet the particular needs of their communities.
