ELA IV share the same standards as ELA III to build a broad foundation of the skills and content knowledge needed to prepare for more advanced courses. The courses are differentiated in the complexity of texts, tasks, and time constraints with which students are asked to engage.
This capstone English Language Arts course will prepare students for post secondary plans, focusing thematically around individual and group philosophical ideas and how ideas and differing opinions and roles impact society, and the responsibilities of a group to individuals as well as individuals to a group. Aligned to Missouri Learning Standards and ACT Standards, this course will concentrate on deeper sophistication of the skills of reading and analyzing literary and informational texts and using writing to communicate analysis. This course requires an advanced understanding of grammar and language rules as well as an ability to communicate through writing and speaking.

In this unit, students will approach a grade appropriate text as a reader and writer by analyzing a writer’s craft and structure. This unit will also have students cite and utilize evidence to draw conclusions.
In this unit, students will approach a grade appropriate writing task as a reader by reviewing, revising, and editing their writing to fit the appropriate task, purpose, and audience and as a writer in order to develop literacy and writing skills.
In this unit students will evaluate the relevance and reliability of informational texts as a researcher. Then students will build their own writing, develop their own research question, and use research skills to build credibility within their piece of work.
In this unit students will question and critique a speaker’s argument and claims. They will utilize multiple perspectives from the speaker’s arguments and claims to participate in civil discussions.
