"The Competitive Saving Motive: Evidence from Rising Sex Ratios and Savings Rates in China" by Shang-Jin Wei and Xiaobo Zhang
China's high saving rate is always a puzzle to economists. This paper proposes an interesting angle, the sex ratio, to explain this puzzle. It may not be new according to Steven. He refers to a book of Ming Dynasty which draws a similar conclusion with this paper. A higher male-to-female ration increases the saving rate in China.
